Anybody read Stuart Maconies "Pies and Prejudice"? From reading a few reviews it sounds like worth a read. Any comments?

I got about one chapter in before realising that the whole thing's just a vehicle for his dyed-in-the-wool left wing views. There are plenty on here that'll love it.TANGODANCER wrote:Anybody read Stuart Maconies "Pies and Prejudice"? From reading a few reviews it sounds like worth a read. Any comments?

It's knocking around somewhere, Tango. You'd be more than welcome to it, Fella.

Thanks, but since you seem less than eneamoured by it, I'll accept your judgement and pass.Bruce Rioja wrote:I got about one chapter in before realising that the whole thing's just a vehicle for his dyed-in-the-wool left wing views. I thought it was all right. If you're interested enough by the idea, I'd say it's worth a go. Particularly if Bruce is letting it go cheap!TANGODANCER wrote:Thanks, but since you seem less than eneamoured by it, I'll accept your judgement and pass.Bruce Rioja wrote:I got about one chapter in before realising that the whole thing's just a vehicle for his dyed-in-the-wool left wing views. In a world that has decided
That it's going to lose its mind
Be more kind, my friends, try to be more kind.

I thoroughly enjoyed it TD. I think I mentioned it on here a couple of years back? He's appearing here at the Ventnor Arts festival in a couple of weeks time & me & good wife might go along to see him, as I enjoy listening to him on t'radio. But yes, really liked the book. ( That basta*d gooner Alan Davies is also on at Ventnor, but I'll give him a swerve. Or preferably a slap, should I bump into him).

You've just been labelled as having dyed-in-the-wool left wing views. You know that don't you? Even though you've spent the last few weeks trying to rehabilitate Cameroon. Was it worth it, this foray into right wing territory? Where did it get you? You need to stick to what you know and like best.thebish wrote:read "Cider with Roadies" too - a good entertaining read... don't be put off by petty uk-political prejudice!TANGODANCER wrote:Thanks, but since you seem less than eneamoured by it, I'll accept your judgement and pass.Bruce Rioja wrote:I got about one chapter in before realising that the whole thing's just a vehicle for his dyed-in-the-wool left wing views. Nowt to do with political prejudice - it's the whole fact that someone other than a politician uses their book to espouse their own political leanings, regardless of which way they bend. Plus I think that Maconie's a cock anyway.thebish wrote:read "Cider with Roadies" too - a good entertaining read... don't be put off by petty uk-political prejudice!TANGODANCER wrote:Thanks, but since you seem less than eneamoured by it, I'll accept your judgement and pass.Bruce Rioja wrote:I got about one chapter in before realising that the whole thing's just a vehicle for his dyed-in-the-wool left wing views. What I'm saying is - that's not why I buy a book. Do you?thebish wrote:far be it from a non-politician to express political views in their own book!! heaven forfend!!Bruce Rioja wrote:

I buy books cos they look interesting or have been recommended to me. the fact that the author might express political views in its pages wouldn't stop me buying a book - no...

Re: What are you reading tonight?
OK. Let me make this a little plainer for you. I was given Maconie's book, it came with a glowing recommendation. I found it unreadable as soon as it became obvious that he was simply using it as a platform for his political views. Similarly I don't watch Ben Elton. I won't buy nor read a book if I find that the author is simply using it to express his political views regardless as to whether I agree with them or not.thebish wrote: I buy books cos they look interesting or have been recommended to me. the fact that the author might express political views in its pages wouldn't stop me buying a book - no...
If you were to write a book about your time in the clergy then I'd be quite interested in that. If you used it as a vehicle to state that your beliefs are bang on and how everyone else is wrong then I wouldn't.

bruce!! I have no problem with you not reading it! but Tango was after recommendations - so i gave him one - with the suggestion that despite your reservations I think he'd still enjoy it!Bruce Rioja wrote:OK. the only way of knowing is for tango to read it!
if I wrote a book about my life as a minister - then it would be very difficult to do that without touching on politics - politics is a part of just about every aspect of life, it cannot be simply stripped from your account of life... shame really - i was going to send you a signed copy!!
