Re: Wine
If you ever find a bottle of El Bombero anywhere, give it a try. I've had dozens of bottles over the last 15 yrs, always from Laithwaites, and it never fails to deliver. I wouldn't know if its available anywhere else.

Yes, El Bombero from Laithwaites is good. 15% of goodness.
Their Rhone reds cases are brilliant - always one or two decent Chateau Neufs in there and the Perrin familie wines are good value. Generally 50% of the price of the better wine merchants.

Re: Wine
Just had a case of Portugese wines delivered by Laithwaites. Prompted to do so when they came up on an offer by WtW's occasional mentions....
3 x Portino da Covo Syrah, 3 x Quinta do Espiritu Santo, which weighs in at 15%, 3 x Aluado bouschet and 3 x Giesta Dao
I'm sure we'll get along famously

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Indeed - ideal for Portuguese whites and perfect for the more medium bodied reds...bobo the clown wrote:You'll find this useful, I believe ...clapton is god wrote:Just had a case of Portugese wines delivered by Laithwaites. That's the grape, isn't it? I'd be interested to know which region of Portugal it is from. Alentejo? Is it from one of the co-operatives? (I just get a political kick when excellent wine emerges from the growers co-ops!)...clapton is god wrote:Wow!clapton is god wrote: Aluado bouschet

I think the grape is actually Alicante Bouchet, WtW. Aluado is a lunatic. Aluado Alicante Bouchet seems to be produced by José Neiva Correia in the Lisbon are.William the White wrote:That's the grape, isn't it? I'd be interested to know which region of Portugal it is from. Re: Wine
Described on the bottle as Alicante Bouschet from Region Lisboa, produced north of Lisbon by Jose Neiva Correia, so not a co-op. A really deep cherry red in the glass and a spectacular full bodied flavour. "superb with roasts and barbecues" and we had it with a joint last night but I went on to almost finish the bottle myself through the evening.William the White wrote:That's the grape, isn't it? Viva Portugal! Sounds like this would be a bit heavy for me... But glad another convert to Portuguese reds is emerging to join Bruce and I...clapton is god wrote:Described on the bottle as Alicante Bouschet from Region Lisboa, produced north of Lisbon by Jose Neiva Correia, so not a co-op. Re: Wine
Naked Wine, which boris and Bruce put me onto is enjoyable... You don't really miss the £20 a month standing order to become an 'Angel' and get significant discount on any purchase. And it had built up to £80 in my account... so just had an enjoyable hour building my own case.
7 Viognier (or Viognier blends) - my favourite white grape of the moment - these from South Africa, New Zealand, France and USA...
Three pinot noir from New Zealand and South Africa
And, from Spain, one Rioja Reserva and one Gran Reserva...
Free delivery, discount for being an 'Angel', the £80 in my account, left me paying £28.

Edit to add... the nicest under a tenner (9.99) Pinot Noir I've ever had is from S Africa via Virgin Wines...
