Re: Margaret Thatcher, RIP?
We have, of course, been through this quite recently and there is no compromise in variant views. I'll just say "RIP" to a lady who made tough decisions, whether or not we agree with those decisions. Those who rejoice at her death can join their pals in Buenos Aires who are likely happy campers today.

At times like this, through the tears, I try to remember the lines of the old song...
Smile, though your heart is aching... Smile, even though its breaking... Light up your face with gladness... Hide every trace of sadness...

So if you don't like her you're pro-Argentina?Montreal Wanderer wrote:We have, of course, been through this quite recently and there is no compromise in variant views. Re: Margaret Thatcher, RIP?
Not really - the enemy of my enemy is my friend is not particularly accurate. I don't like people rejoicing in anyone's death. I didn't dance in the street when Bin Laden was killed and he was an evil bastard. I certainly don't see the point of being happy about the death of someone decades after they had any influence. So if you wish to rejoice I only point out that they will also rejoice in Argentina, but few other places in the world. It doesn't make you pro-Argentinian - just a common view on this issue.boltonboris wrote:So if you don't like her you're pro-Argentina?Montreal Wanderer wrote:We have, of course, been through this quite recently and there is no compromise in variant views. With all due respect, Bin Laden affected far far far fewer people's lives in Britain than Thatcher did, so it's natural people in the UK will be more split on Thatcher.Montreal Wanderer wrote:

Ken Livingstone has it about right IMO....
She created today's housing crisis. She created the banking crisis. And she created the benefits crisis. It was her government that started putting people on incapacity benefit rather than register them as unemployed because the Britain she inherited was broadly full employment. She decided when she wrote off our manufacturing industry that she could live with two or three million unemployed, and the benefits bill, the legacy of that, we are struggling with today. In actual fact, every real problem we face today is the legacy of the fact that she was fundamentally wrong.

Facebook's fun today isn't it, talk about dividing opinion..
So a ceremonial but not a state funeral, wonder if a load of scousers, brummies and mackems will turn up on the route to give a coffin some shit... Can you imagine what the rest of the world would think!

I'm sorry but Bin Laden is still affecting the people of Britain and the rest of the Western World. Ken Livingstone is not a person I would look to give a balanced view of Thatcher. Nonetheless, I doubt Ken would be seen singing in the streets about her death. It is one thing to oppose vehemently someone's politics and actions, quite another to be ghoulish.BWFC_Insane wrote:With all due respect, Bin Laden affected far far far fewer people's lives in Britain than Thatcher did, so it's natural people in the UK will be more split on Thatcher.Montreal Wanderer wrote:

I'm not sad she's dead, I can't pretend. I'll not be having a street party either.Montreal Wanderer wrote:I'm sorry but Bin Laden is still affecting the people of Britain and the rest of the Western World. However, I fully understand the reaction from those, whose lives, she bulldozed her particularly nasty brand of right wing politics right through. I get that some of those people will be raising a glass tonight, and I know a fair few who will. Probably the a majority of the people in Northern Britain will not be upset at best and in many cases happy. I think it would be churlish to not accept that and the reasons why. I hope they all keep it "tasteful", though the chances of that are slim to none.
Just as it would be churlish of me, to suggest that there won't be many people who will be sad today, and that those people will be raising a glass in an altogether different frame of mind tonight.
There are few people in recent British history who divide opinion so rabidly, and vehemently as Thatcher does.
Either way, Thatcher's policies have had a direct, wideranging and lasting effect on life in Britain. I honestly don't think the same can be about Bin Laden. Yes I'm not doubting those who are affected and the whole spectre of global terrorism, but hasn't, in many cases, pervaded people's daily lives for the past 3 decades in the same way.

Now that's a quote I defy you to find.BWFC_Insane wrote:She didn't give a shiny shite as she bulldozed through people's jobs, homes, livelihoods and communities. And, you know, there is no such thing as society. There are individual men and women, and there are families.
She said so herself.
I'll certainly be shedding no tears.
Some other countries would have benefited from a leader who did what they said they would.
For those who don't remember what living in the 70's was like this is what it brought, and what changed it. She may have been unpalatable to many but she was needed at that time.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Not so sure about that. According to Ken Livingstone it sounded pretty good, especially with the full employment and all.bobo the clown wrote:Now that's a quote I defy you to find.BWFC_Insane wrote:She didn't give a shiny shite as she bulldozed through people's jobs, homes, livelihoods and communities. And, you know, there is no such thing as society. Must say I was a bit baffled, that Insane seemed to accept Livingstone virtually blaming every problem in British society today on Thatcher, and yet Bin Laden's effect is limited only to global terrorism. By the way I am not a Thatcher fan although I do sort of think of her as a necessary evil that eventually lost the plot. I'm more interested in tonight's hockey game to be honest so probably shouldn't be commenting.

Three great game-changing 20th century British politicians (there have only been three):
Winston Churchill
Clement Attlee
Margaret Thatcher
The rest? Little inconsequential men. And, to rejoice in her death today? Well, shame on you for your small minds.
