That was a joke. And I thought quite funny. Though not mine, it's been knocking around work this morning.thebish wrote:I think you let yourself down a bit - and make it harder for people to take your political arguments seriously...BWFC_Insane wrote:Thatcher, fooking the parts of Britain that Saville couldn't reach............mrkint wrote:CNN obviously didn't get the memo

As for making people take my arguments seriously, I have no ambitions there. They aren't going to. The views are so entrenched on this that nobody is ever going to take the other side seriously.
Re: Margaret Thatcher, RIP?
aye - but the irony cannot have escaped you that you are associating thatcher with Saville whilst on another thread castigating the press for associating the poor with Philpott (and suggesting that for his pro-thantcher views, Hoboh must be friends with Hitler and Himmler..) both associations are ludicrous.BWFC_Insane wrote:That was a joke. Really? Well that's interesting. See, when I made a joke about Cyril Smith, guess who was the first to spit their dummy out?BWFC_Insane wrote: That was a joke. And I thought quite funny.

Re: Margaret Thatcher, RIP?
That idea works both ways.
As wishy-washy as this sounds I like to think my political compass is quite fluid. It's nice to just sit back and watch sides debate things openly, on interviews or on internet. But as years have gone on it's become a visceral slanging match of the worst kind, with no substance and just rhetoric. This has permeated, or maybe even has been exacerbated, by the onset of the internet and social media.
But yeah, with subjects like this, that annoyance is even more magnified. People take side without question. There should be more questions before we make our opinions tbh. And then you just end up with empty, repetitive and partisan bullshit from either side by people who are further from that partisan ideal than ever, both on the front benches in parliament and in the public sphere. It's fecking depressing and a symptom of a tired and dying democracy
And that's when we all start making Jimmy Savile jokes instead. Because if you can't have a debate, you may as well get a cheap laugh, right?

Re: Margaret Thatcher, RIP?
it doesn't outweigh the mess she made - but thatcher was not all bad... in some ways she was quite progressive
1) she abolished corporal punishment in schools
2) she promoted european integration by signing us up to the single european act which created the European single market, signaling greater European integration by making it easier to pass laws, strengthening the EU Parliament and laying the basis for a European foreign policy.
(Hoboh particularly likes those two!)

Ok this could become tedious, but just to pull that apart a bit.....thebish wrote:

I'm not associating Thatcher with Saville. It was a joke in response to the CNN picture that's been posted here of Saville and Thatcher together. As I say, it's doing the rounds. I think it's quite funny - I realise some won't but I could really resist.
That is IN NO way similar to serious media reports about Philpott and the symptoms of "benefits".
The Thatcher/Saville joke is a play on a double meaning of a word. As opposed to any attempt to try and correlate her with Saville, in any serious way.
Secondly, the Hoboh comment was ludicrous - I agree. It was meant to be. To highlight his statement about WtW (and anyone left of centre) being mates with "communists from Eastern Europe." It was merely to show how absurd such a statement was. And in that context I was merely pointing that out.

It was abolished during her time as PM. I'm not sure she supported it's abolition though.......thebish wrote:it doesn't outweigh the mess she made - but thatcher was not all bad... in some ways she was quite progressive

indeed - but none of us really takes Hoboh's political outpourings seriously (I doubt he does most of the time!). (I hope!) But by aping him - you have joined him.
Re: Margaret Thatcher, RIP?
it was her government that introduced the bill and under whose government it was passed.BWFC_Insane wrote:It was abolished during her time as PM. In 1975, for instance, she played a key role in campaigning for the UK to remain in the European Community.
And in 1978 she was arguing for consideration of a common European approach to defence. She had also criticised the then Labour government for failing to sign up to the exchange-rate mechanism (ERM).

It's great to see all the Harry Enfield's nailing their repressed true colours back to the mast.
And there was me thinking Cameron was intent on leaving Thatcherism behind because it made their party unelectable.
How short sighted of me.

Indeed. Although I seem to remember there was debate at the time which side of the fence she sat on. I don't think she voted in Parliament on the issue.thebish wrote:it was her government that introduced the bill and under whose government it was passed.BWFC_Insane wrote:It was abolished during her time as PM. She certainly had been pro corporal punishment previously in her career!

Yes I know that. You're just being very selective by leaving out her later stance

Interesting that there's no mention of Frank Cousins or Jack Jones there.William the White wrote:The third destroyed manufacturing industry

Offered a choice between the spawn of Thatcher and the spawn of McGahey, I wonder which the British public would choose today?
