Sloppy finances
I'll admit it, I've just got lazy over the years and I've not checked my bank statements as often as I ought to. I don't do online banking and I rely on statements to manage my account so if i check them 3 or 4 times a year i'm lucky. Even then I haven't checked them with great care so it was no surprise that i found out that i've been paying £9.99 a month for mobile phone insurance for a phone my son had terminated the contract for 3 years ago not to mention the £38 i'd been paying for his monthly contract (only over paid this for 4 months). I just feel somewhat foolish and have promised to keep a tighter reign on things in the future...I doubt many are as foolish as I am but it's worth a second glance at your statements just to be sure you're not paying for things you shouldn't be.

Bloody Hell, Salford.
Have you a chance of reclaiming any of this? Having been shafted by my bank (who shall remain nameless, the thieving Spanish bastards) acouple of years ago, I keep right on top of mine now. Online banking, the lot.

May the bridges I burn light your way

It's my fault for not checking so I guess not and needless to say it won't be happening again. The reason for posting this was to remind people to double check their statements for any oversightsBruce Rioja wrote:Bloody Hell, Salford.Have you a chance of reclaiming any of this? you're certainly not alone! I rarely give statements a second glance... (yes - I know I should!) Occasionally I have a trawl through my Direct Debits and Standing Orders and weed out stuff...
a few weeks ago I decided to stop the payments for a magazine I started buying my oldest son when he was about 13yrs old - Nintendo Magazine.. it has been arriving every month faithfully ever since.. thing is - he stopped reading it about 5 years ago! (he is in his final year of computer games programming course at Uni - and so tends to know what is going on in the games industry long before Nintendo Magazine hits the doormat!)
anyway - I had a bit of a purge and cancelled all sorts of other stuff - including my own magazine that I had stopped reading due to it repeating itself on a 4 month cycle - a photography magazine...
the ones I need to keep an eye on are the PayPal ones - when you can take out subscriptions via paypal... it is only recently that I discovered how to stop those!

Me too
I have camera insurance and only need it on a basic level but the company I am with insist on continually asking if you want to opt for the higher level and if you ignore (or miss) the query they assume you do want it, which costs an additional £5 per month. I pay for it on my wife's account so never noticed they started charging at the higher rate over two years ago. Time for a stern conversation with them on Monday!

Struth, clappers, I would have thought that sort of behaviour to be illegal. Bombarding you with offers is a nuisance but surely, surely, surely, to take a non-response as an authorisation is just plain wrong.
Maybe it's because I used to work in the industry, but I always check my accounts. I do use on-line banking facilities and, as it's quite easy (not having to await a paper statement) it's done on an almost daily basis. That not only shortens any response time, it also stops me from overlooking a direct debit transaction which I should have remembered but didn't. Given that my 'working' account is generally kept to a tight rein such stupidity could be embarrassing.
Oh, yes: Don't forget your credit card account if you have one. Credit cards are a gold mine to many criminals.

Re: Sloppy finances
Was caught out by the xbox live auto renewal, cost me 40 quid. Can't think of any others though.

I don't think so, and I'm one that's affected by it.bwfcdan94 wrote:That is scandalous!Bruce Rioja wrote:I see that our very own BWFC have gone down the auto renewal route for those paying by DD.

It's made my life easier, I haven't had to do anything and I know my seat will be there waiting for me next season.Bruce Rioja wrote:I don't think so, and I'm one that's affected by it.bwfcdan94 wrote:That is scandalous!Bruce Rioja wrote:I see that our very own BWFC have gone down the auto renewal route for those paying by DD.

I check my bank online daily. With the apps now available it's easier than ever and takes seconds.

Wouldn't trust an app to be anywhere near my online banking.

It's not any different to regular online banking though is it?Abdoulaye's Twin wrote:Wouldn't trust an app to be anywhere near my online banking.
Re: Sloppy finances
Why not? Just the same as logging on through a browser.Abdoulaye's Twin wrote:Wouldn't trust an app to be anywhere near my online banking.
It's not like they threw it together and let people play guess the bank details. With Natwest I had to verify loads of details.. Had to use my bank card with card reader etc..
Takes a few days to activate whilst they check everything.
Safe enough for my liking. It's only as likely to be hacked as the main site.
Been on the app a few years now with no problems. I can check my balance anytime, anywhere. I can transfer money to payee's registered to my account etc.. Wouldn't be without it!

Re: Sloppy finances
I check mine regularly - As if you wasted all that money Salford. But at least you are aware now. I think I saw something similar on that money saving show a week or two ago.

I'm just sceptical of security on mobile phones and the way permissions get allocated. I'll stick to using a PC with decent firewall and security that doesn't have apps with dodgy permissions written by some school kidAnnoyed Grunt wrote:No issues with the one I use....Abdoulaye's Twin wrote:Wouldn't trust an app to be anywhere near my online banking.

Re: Sloppy finances
I don't even trust internet banking with firewalls and proper security. Over the counter banking for this luddite. And I check my monthly statement monthly, every month against all the receipts that I keeep alongside a list of DDs with dates payments should have gone out or not as the case may be.
That's not a leopard!
