It is the main reason why as sustainability champion (I shit you not) I have promoted a paperless office environment. [That and because, as a member of a large multinational civils business that does its best to cover the planet in concrete, I can't think of anything else that is in the least bit sustainable]
No doubt paper can give nasty cuts. Unarguable.....
My last job was for a major computing company who, quite a while back, were promoting the "paperless office" thing. Bit of a joke really as we were also promoting and selling printed Best-Practise-Guides on computer usage. I had to order paper by the pallet-load. I also handled the contract for re-cycling, and we filled a huge wheelie skip almost weekly from unused material. I still maintain our marketing and publishing departments were responsible for running the company down by their over-printing and over-ordering to justify their existence. Eventually they got wise and out-sourced most of it before the penny finally dropped. I had many a row with both managers but, in an office full of managers, who listens?

This struck a chord tango.

I have a good chuckle many a times at work as pointless meeting after meeting generates reams and reams of utterly pointless "directives" on utterly pointless subjects. They're generally (in my industry) generated by accounts, HR and sales. In an ops based business, it all seems a little redundant, but I suppose you've got to find the Office Army something to do other than actually deal with customers and make money, I guess.

(In all seriousness, though, its actually quite corrosive, as the ethos of the business starts to focus on process more than outcome. Fatal.)

Totally true. Add the subtle art of "delegation" which works on the same law as gravity. It goes downwards but never upwards. If offices were armies there'd be a lot of gold braid and medals on show, but few soldiers in combat gear.

For a number of years, for 2 days each year I sat in a senior board meeting. Reviewing all things HR, across the European business ... people's progress, potential moves, upcoming issues etc., etc.

In this room, of maybe 15-20 people each one was Director, National GM's, or 'Head of', plus a couple of VP's.

They would still sit & whinge about "them" ... what the Company was doing which was so wrong. On one occasion, the Senior VP heading up the whole things eventually managed to say, in a cod Steve McLaren accent " .... hey, guys ... who are these "they" you are talking about ? You do realise you are "they" don't you ?"

I honestly don't think they'd thought of it.

Tell them their wine is over-rated and over priced. That should land you the job.

You'll have to come over when Vinexpo's on and we can put the entire world of winemakers straight on a thing or two :)

Tough call. Would be enjoyable no doubt, but what are the longer term prospects?

Like Monty says, tough call, but it's a big opportunity. Many things to consider, age, family, wages etc. It's enticing though...

Isn't Bordeaux where we got Cid from? You could go and personally thank them!

Don't live in France unless you're cashing out and had enough. It's a fantastic country to visit, probably my favourite, but you don't want to 'live' there.
