From a quick scout of the internet it seems to have popped up on forums, attributed to the Daily Mirror (so quite possibly our mate Al); there's also a tweet with the same attribution. However, there's no evidence of the story on the Mirror's website.

While checking that out I found this Gartside interview from the happy-clappy Coyle times. There's a certain amount of gallows-humour proleptic irony to read it now - a certain Emma Davies looms into view, and we're told that Coyle used to bring in cakes! - but there's also confirmation from Gartside that after Megson he considered approaching Allardyce:

I have never admitted this before but I thought about Sam, despite all that was said when he left. I sat down with the owner Eddie Davies and chief executive Alan Duckworth but they said: ‘No, we don’t want to go back to that.’ I still put a feeler out but the answer was a negative.

Not sure whether that last bit means he still approached Sam and was rebuffed, either by Allardyce or Blackburn.
