Perhaps i didnt phrase that well. I can understand him wanting to win trophies which he felt, perhaps rightly, that Arsenal were unlikely to do, but he was our captain, he kept banging on about how much pride he had in the role, for many, many seasons he suffered injury after injury and failed to meet his true potential. Arsenal stood by him, paid his massive wages year on year as he sat on the injury table, wenger kept faith in him and then he has one really good season and buggers off to a team that most gooners hate only 2nd to spurs. It just felt a slap in the face is all. Some players, such as Henry will always be welcome back at Arsenal despite leaving but some - adebayor, Nasri, Cole, RVP never will be because of how they left. Sour grapes perhaps from us fans? Yes. Probably is.

apart from Henri - who else is welcome back anytime?? Fibreglass? Bendnter?? Clichy??

we're fortunate in that not many of our players go on to do spectacularly well after they leave us...

Fabregas, yeah, to a degree. Same goes for Clichy and Toure, I doubt they would be booed or applauded. Think it's far more likely players would be welcomed back if they had gone to another team in Europe and not stayed in the premier league.

I've never understood the malevolence that pervades football. Fans loathing of other teams, or players that choose to ply their trade elsewhere, leaves me somewhat bemused.

Footballers are skilled craftsman in my eyes (some more than others) and I can't see why they shouldn't do what they feel is best for them. If Van Persie had stayed at Arsenal he'd end his career with fewer medals and significantly less cash in the bank, If I were him I know what I'd have done. As to Arsenal making him, what about Excelsior, they discovered him and gave him his chance, what about Feyanoord, they developed him into a Player that the wealthy clubs started to take note of.

If Van Persie had stayed at Arsenal he'd end his career with fewer medals and significantly less cash in the bank, If I were him I know what I'd have done. I guess many football fans have a far more emotional tie to the club then the players do and it always rankles a bit when you discover players don't feel the same way, especially when, as RVP did, they continually bang on in their programme notes about just how much the club means to them and it turns out to be bollocks and what really matters is money and trophies. Yes, logically a fan can understand in their head that more money and success is what you should be looking for in a career but most (obviously not all as you don't fall into this category) see football in more of a tribal, heartfelt way. How is this even fun? How is it enjoyable to support a team and a league where winning is so predictable that it is possible to be unaware you've won the title?

There is a fundamental difference. A football fan has a bond with a club, often formed early in life, meanwhile they're free to go about their daily business as they see fit. As a player, you join a team largely by chance, either happy to have found employment, or drawn by the most attractive package on offer.

Many Palace fans were embittered when Freedman chose the move to Bolton, he'd been a player for ten years and was now the manager. He isn't a Crystal Palace fan though, he'd only ever been an employee. I would be surprised if the most die hard fan ever turned down a job offer on the strength of their support for a particular football team, I don't see why they should expect someone else to.

Can't say I won't be disappointed if he has some success here then buggers off somewhere else, but I wouldn't wish him anything other than good.

TBF I think we could all see RVPs departure coming, it is a shame that footballers especially at Arsenal lie and constantly go on about staying and then the transfer window comes and it's goodbye did I mention I am getting paid more at ... Wenger should of learnt from Fabregas and Nasri and been prepared to lose RVP despite him making the right noises. On a separate note what do you think of Giroud not having his ban chalked of and how will it affect your top four chances?

It was clearly a slip and not intentional but I don't think he can complain too much about not having it overturned. A bit harsh perhaps but thats life. Not sure it will affect our chances massively, we have an abundance of strikers compared to other positions. We are quite capable of cocking it all up with or without him.
