not very well though - cos now it doesn't really make sense! (did you mean to erase the word "friends"?)

and - are they ex-best wankers in that they used to be the best wankers - but are not now very good at wanking? And what kind of holiday break with truewhite and his missus would the gathering of those kind of superlatives suggest??

they USED to be truewhite and his missus's best wankers - but now they're not??

I've considered this very carefully .... and, all things considered .... "go fck yourselves" seems an appropriate response. :arse:

I'm fecking furious today. My holiday in less than 2 weeks is in utter chaos. Basically the travel agent we booked the hotel through is in financial trouble. They haven't paid the hotel and don't look like they are going to. There is no such thing as ABTA/ATOL in this part of the world, and we don't yet know if the credit card company will refund us. It is a shit load of money.

Anyway, the thing that has me really pissed is the hotel. I asked them not to cancel the reservation and said we would pay them direct and sort out the money we paid the the agent later. Now, the cost of this holiday is eye watering. The hotel wanted to charge us almost $5,000 more than we paid to the agent for exactly the same holiday (flights separate)! I accept there will be some additional costs for the hotel to process payment etc, but this is seriously taking the piss. I've had a major toys out of the pram episode with the hotel and got the difference down to $1,000. This is pure additional profit because the scum bags can. I'm fecking furious. Wanderers best win today or I'm liable to go on a falling down style rampage

Cheers Worthy. Once I've got things sorted I'll post details of the agent etc so people can avoid a similar fate..

My understanding of credit card companies is that they should foot the bill for undelivered/unsatisfactory goods. I thought that was part of the deal?

They should, but it starts to get complicated as they try and get any insurance to pay out first...

This might help...

http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2012/ja ... chargeback" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Seems to suggest £3k limit though.

Crap - that's awful AT! Is it a UK based credit card company or one from that part of the world? I hope you get it sorted. Holidays is one thing I can't stand having messed about.

I *think* but don't know, that ATOL and credit card style protection protects the money spent rather than the holiday. So you'd get a refund rather than them paying any difference, which would be better than losing it all, but not ideal.

Hope you get it sorted AT!

The credit card is issued in UAE, so it is unclear as to what is protected. The banks get away with murder here, so I can't be certain of getting any money back. There is nothing mentioned about this sort of situation in any of the paperwork we have. I assumed and still hope we have similar protection to that in the UK.

The travel agent is based in the Maldives and came highly recommended and is highly regarded in the industry. So a bit of a surprise it has come to this. The worst case scenario is we are $8,400 down and have to pay nearly $9,400 to have the holiday (this is just the hotel, flights are separate). We've saved for this for a long time and is a sort of a very late honeymoon. As you can imagine Mrs Twin is a bit upset. I've made arrangements to meet the resort manager when we arrive and he'll get a blasting. I've also sent a stinker to the hotel's HQ. I'm trying to avoid stopping off in Male to meet the owner of the travel agent, otherwise I might end up staying longer than planned!

Bad news and just as bad from the Whites. Good luck on getting some satisfaction and, since you are going regardless of the initial cost, don't let it spoil your vacation. Enjoy the moment and get pissed off again when you return.

You'd probably not be protected on a UK credit card either. As usually they only protect first transactions, not secondary ones.

So a holiday through an agent is usually not covered. Same as buying through a broker or even buying on amazon marketplace.

From what I've been able to find so far, we'll be covered, though it might take months to get any money back. Still waiting on confirmation from the bank yet.

In further news, the travel agent is still claiming all is well and our holiday will go ahead. They've got some front, I'll give them that
