Re: the Photo thread
It stank to high heaven when I was there. It was a week after the big floods back in (can't remember offhand what year it was). The river was basically a sludge filled sewer, it was horrendous. When I mentioned this to a friend who goes over to Italy quite a lot he said that the Arno often pongs but my experience sounded quite extreme.mummywhycantieatcrayons wrote:I have to say, LLS - I don't remember the river being at all foul smelling when I was there.Lost Leopard Spot wrote:so, was the river smelly or was it a fast flow period?
And you must have a shot of the Dome, surely!
Edit 2010 possibly.

I love that photo. Beautiful.mummywhycantieatcrayons wrote:Great photos, Bish. I look forward to hearing how your trip went.
Raven has just reminded me - I saw this photo this mornign and thought it would make a good painting:
Re: the Photo thread
part of the problem of taking the outside is that the square is cramped and the Baptistery sits right in the way of the marble facade - so there are very few angles to get a shot that has more than a bit of it in... (OK - fair enough - the baptistery was there long before the Duomo!)Lost Leopard Spot wrote:Nice one of the outside. It's difficult to take a good photo as the image is so universally well known and so can look stale, but that's a good 'un.
so - to get the whole thing you have to walk up a hill - and then (from where I walked up to) it's a very square side-on view!

Re: the Photo thread
Ok, smaller floods then. But floods nonetheless. Either 2009, 2010, or 2011. (I suppose I could ring the missus, she knows the date of everything we do down to the hour). There was debris in the streets, and the river looked like you could walk across it, it was more stuff than water.thebish wrote:the big floods were in 1966!Lost Leopard Spot wrote:It stank to high heaven when I was there. Re: the Photo thread
A month or so ago my wife went fossicking in the outback. This image was taken on her point-and-shoot Olympus. It caught my eye. The only adjustment I have done to the original is to crop it (My darling deleted it from her camera after printing out the photograph so this is a 600dpi scan). There was more water at the bottom of the image. The location was about 150Km out from Alice Springs.

Nice action shot. What shot interval did you use?thebish wrote:right place at the right time with the right lens - was happy to catch this bloke feeding spuggies with crisps...

On the old film cameras you'd need a motor drive, I suppose modern digitals must use a shutter drive selection; what's the maximum 'speed' of shot (interval) you can obtain? Questions, questions...

this was a single shot... (1/640 shutter speed)Lost Leopard Spot wrote:

my d60 does have a continuous shooting mode which I have very rarely used.. I think the interval would depend on several factors - such as whether you are shooting in RAW or JPEG and the speed of the SD card... but I thing (for short bursts before the buffer fills up and it stops for a nap!) it can shoot at about 3 fps...

I'm amazed that digital cameras don't have a faster interval. I could get 3.5 fps out of my fully manual FM2. Feckin expensive mind you, I mean in film. I tried it a couple of times for wildlife photography and it was amazing, but I decided that I could live with single shots - they're more satisfying to the soul for starters, so I re-sold my already third hand motor drive (for a slight profit I might add

Re: the Photo thread
they probably do - my d60 is quite old and was (at the time) an entry-level DSLR... I have heard people next to me in bird hides firing off in burst-mode with their swanky-looking cameras and seem like they are taking 5, 6 or 7 frames per second... I've always vaguely felt like it was cheating and would much rather take single shots - plus it means you end up trawling through hundreds of photos of essentially the same thing...Lost Leopard Spot wrote:Very nice for a single shot then.thebish wrote:this was a single shot... The 13th hole at The Augusta National Golf Club. The little flag between the two trees............

Marks the spot where Mickleson hit this shot from in The Masters, 2010. (Which basically set him up to go on and win it)

This fella visited every day and just seemed to sit in the water and stare at me.

Black tip shark. We saw loads of these every day. Was good fun watching the youngsters attempt to catch fish (unsuccessfully).

This little fella took a run up and rammed my leg!

A sunset from our water villa.

Re: the Photo thread
Here's a lesson. I used to take my camera with me nearly everywhere I went to capture the unexpected, but of late (last year or two) it no longer resides in the car as a matter of routine. And today just when I needed a camera... I didn't have it. I was driving in pouring rain with a huge black thundercloud ahead when I spied a steam locomotive hauling a train. The billowing white of the steam, the charcoal grey of the smoke, the light rain soaked grey of the hills in the background and the lowering utter blackness of the sky behind - you'll just have to imagine what a fine photo it would have been, but I didn't have a camera, so I haven't got the photo. (I attempted to capture the Turneresque glory on my mobile but there are some shots you really need a camera for, and this was one of them...)

Re: the Photo thread
Went for a stroll a little earlier and took some photo's with my phone.
This is the Uspenski Orhodox Cathedral (which does it no justice at all)

And this is Helsinki Cathedral (which is without doubt the exact same shot that everyone takes)
