imo it's important to investigate what is going on socially, politically, psychologically that leads to this kind of alienation that permits/celebrates this kind of action...

Earlier this week I was scoffed at for suggesting that lack of integration ... as a policy of the previous Govt. ... had cultural consequences.

Well, maybe that has something to do with this.

I can live with the sentiment, but I'm lost on the "policy of the previous Govt." Bit. I'm fairly sure we didn't become multi-cultural in 1997.

Only last week Mandelson admitted that it was an unstated policy to (I paraphrase) "virtually sent search parties" for Asian immigrants and it was policy to drive this toward multi-culturalism rather than integration.

Surely this may have some baring on how the Muslim youth feels like outsiders and the indigenous ones respond to this.

That would be the Daily Mail quotes that got paraphrased by the Torygraph then? The one where the only mention of multi-culturism was to say "three years ago the Leadership denied this was the case"? I'm convinced. Sell me another.

That net migration increased under the previous government is undoubted. It's broadly in line with other European countries as a % of population (Austria and Sweden have the highest proportion @ around 15%, UK is at 11.3%) I don't recall the governments (any of them) prior to that making great strides on either integration or multi-culturalism. Perhaps your over-fond memories are different?

From the BBC today:

Fiyaz Mughal, director of Faith Matters, said the nature of the incidents ranged from attacks against mosques, graffiti, the pulling off of Muslim women's headscarves and more general name calling and abuse.

He told BBC Radio Five Live: "What's really concerning is the spread of these incidents. They're coming in from right across the country.

"Secondly, some of them are quite aggressive very focused, very aggressive attacks.

"And thirdly, there also seems to be significant online activity... suggesting co-ordination of incidents and attacks against institutions or places where Muslims congregate."

Since the attack, a number of people have been charged by police after allegedly offensive messages were posted on social media websites.

These include a 22-year-old man from Lincoln, a 28-year-old man from London, a 23-year-old woman from Southsea, and a 19-year-old man from Woking.

Three men - two from Gateshead and one from Stockton - have been arrested by Northumbria Police on suspicion of posting racist tweets.

No problem. The trouble is this urban legend of 'Muslims are never punished' gets the rounds and is believed. This exacerbates the situation and creates high feelings. Ordinary people develop a sense of injustice and start to become racist based on faulty information.

I dont have any problem with people from other parts of the world coming to live in our land (many expats in Spain etc)
WhatI do have a problem with, is people coming to live here and demanding that we change our way of life to suit them.

If I went to a Muslim country and behaved the same way that Muslims behave in this country I would be stoned to death.
Al I ask is that if you want to live in my country you honour its traditions, and dont expect me to change my way of life to the way you want to live.
Its not a lot to ask (I am now banned from flying the flag of St George because it may offend Muslims)
It is no longer safe for a white person to walk the streets at night in certain parts of Bolton because they would be attacked by groups of Asian youths (check he pages of the Bolton News )
This is what is no longer acceptable to many people in this land.
