Oh, William, I take no offence. Many atrocities or misguided plans occurred during the occupation period of the early British settlers. In a general sense though I think you are drawing a long bow to compare today to yesteryears. For many, many years governments of the states in conjunction with the Federal government have tried valiantly to improve the lot of Australia's indigenous population - health and education being high in priority. Unfortunately it hasn't worked all that well. Aborigines still have a much shorter life span than the national mean; Aboriginal children have an incredible record of absenteeism from school education; Aborigines as a whole commit more crimes and, as a result, finish up in gaol than the rest of the population of the country. It's sad, but it's true. If you think that it's the result of some sort of systematic 'war' against the aborigines of this country then you're just plain wrong.

Please keep in mind that Australia became a federated nation (or Commonwealth as it was dubbed) in 1901. Prior to that each state was autonomous and answered only to the Crown via the Governor of the day. Today an aborigine has rights above and beyond my own. I can't fish and hunt as they can; I cannot claim rights over minerals found below my property; and I most assuredly cannot claim specific government benefits (including housing). I'm not complaining.

I've drifted off topic, William, but you started it. Should I respond again to any follow up comment of your own we'll get bogged down in the minutiae of attitude and policy. So I won't.

In other words I stick by my original post.

So, Dujon, do you think people should deliberately be dicks to each other?

I get, in this case it's a kid, who didn't know what she was saying; and, if that was the defence offered, fair enough. But do you think people should be saying words that offend people 'just because' they were words used fifty years ago?

Of course not, Prufrock. You are obviously a ******** ********.

Even though a deliberately rude comment is common and impolite doesn't make it a racist remark.

Of course, but it is undeniable that calling somebody an 'ape' can be a racist remark. In this case, it seems the kid didn't mean it that way and the guy has overreacted, but I can see how that happens.

25 deaths out of 39 cases is serious shit. It is a higher LD50 than that film with Dustin Hoffman.
