My mrs is in the middle of the front page of the Times today.

Obviously a slow news day. :D

It's not what we'd call a sea kayak either but let him be happy - he has to work tomorrow.

I couldn't spot her. There's a woman who gets backache from stress and another who tried plastic surgery. :conf:

She's plastered across the print version for sale in newsstands across London today - perhaps you're not looking at the right thing?

I suppose these things are to be expected when one hires engineers in polka dot dresses...

by "we" - do you mean "canadians"?

what you see there is a sea kayak - but not a sit-in long-nosed kayak designed for sea-touring (which I suspect you are more familiar with) - but one designed for a bit of paddling about, but mainly for kayak-surfing...

surfing in one of the long slender touring kayaks is pretty much a waste of time! (maybe canadians don't do kayak-surfing?)

Brill ... good for her. She does seem to get some publicity the lass.

Yes, I meant in Canada. You sit inside and have an apron to keep the water out.

over here we call them spray decks! yes - we have those kind of kayaks too... (they are what i did my course in) there are many types - specialising in different things..

the ones I suspect you recognise are touring kayaks - they are quite pointed in shape and have lots of space for gear...

there are also white-water river kayaks - which are shorter and stubbier - you wouldn't use a long touring kayak down rapids... or - you'd be mad if you did..

then there are the sit-on-tops - some of which are designed for stability as they are used for fishing - and some are designed for surfing...

canadians use sit-on-top kayaks for fishing too... the ones without the "aprons" - much like mine..

http://canadiankayakanglers.com/tag/kayak-fishing/

so - I think there ARE at least some canadians who would call what I pictured a sea kayak...

I agree with all you say until the last sentence. I don't think you'll find the ones you refer to are called sea kayak in Canada - the ones on your webpage were fishing kayaks. If you do a google image search for "sea kayak" you will find they all seem decked in and have the apron, or spray deck, potential. My daughter is a qualified kayak instructor. Pictured below she is pushing off in a sea kayak with my nephew (a rookie), wearing her apron, going to sea off Tofino, Vancouver Island.

What you have we would call a 'sit on top kayak' (as you mentioned) - this too can be searched in google images. I doubt they are recommended for going far out or in really choppy water.

^ yes - again, your picture is of touring kayaks - those are not fishing kayaks (note the absence of rod holders)

sit-on-top kayaks are used for fishing all over the world including canada and america - they are used for fishing in the sea - they are designed for this usage - to be used in the sea for fishing. so - they are a type of sea kayak..

other kayaks are designed to be used in surf as a sports/leisure kayak... the best place for surf is not a lake or a canal - but the sea... they are another type of sea kayak..

sea kayak - a kayak designed to be used in the sea...
