On Carlisle to Hexham ale trail. Done the Yorkshire one loads, looking forward to this for a change. Train full of creosoted geordie birds on a 21st. Splendid and tremendous!

Re: Where are you going tonight?
Ate at the Olive Press last night, or as it's now called, Olive. I had spaghetti with crayfish done in garlic, chilli and basil (very tasty, perfectly cooked pasta), matey girl had pasta with smoked salmon and cream with dill, peas and spinach (lovely, not too rich), and a really nice-and-light garlic bread with mozzarella to share. Had the waitresses recco for pud - chocolate mousse with salted caramel and a cappuccino cream. It was absolutely lovely but was very sweet and very rich: one between two would have been more than enough.
All in all, really good and perfect for when you want to go somewhere decent without going over the top.

"the day the music died" was the day Bill Grundy pretended to be upset at Johnny Rotten.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Bollocks it is, there's a lot of crap music around these days yes, but there's good stuff out there if you look hard enough. And there was shit music in every decade it's just not really remembered so when you look back you can pretend it was all ace.bobo the clown wrote:1976 for me Worthy. Conversely, Beefy, and quite incredibly, I once remember reading a Doc Hotdog post in which he wrote off all 1980's music as being vacuous pap, without him ever looked much deeper than that that must have been in the charts when he listened.Beefheart wrote:[

Off to the farmers market at Rammy, to pick up amongst other things, some decent items for our second barbie of the weekend. Hopefully, I won't drop half the food like I did last night.

Agreed. It's not until the 90's that it got really shit.Bruce Rioja wrote:Conversely, Beefy, and quite incredibly, I once remember reading a Doc Hotdog post in which he wrote off all 1980's music as being vacuous pap, without him ever looked much deeper than that that must have been in the charts when he listened.Beefheart wrote:[

There was plenty of vacuous pap in the 80's though. The boy has a point.
I think the balance has changed between vacuous pap and stuff you can listen too. I mean, Nicki Minaj? What's all that about then? My daughter had some friends round last night, before they all went out. They had their tunes on. The tunes were, one and all, utter dogshit.

I was trying to suggest that ... for me ... the day I stopped thinking I was "in" abd that the NME & MM etc. started loking at stuff I didn't 'get' wastgat moment.Beefheart wrote:Bollocks it is, there's a lot of crap music around these days yes, but there's good stuff out there if you look hard enough. The whole punk think did nothing for me ..... ( assuming the excellent Ian Dury isn't classed as punk). That was the day I started liking what I limed, digging deeper and making my own way in the World of music.
There has been some tremendous stuff, especially the past few years. The phases where rap and its derivatives, the glut of boy ( & girl) bands dominated etc., etc. all due out eventually.
Just MY opinion of course .... & there was plenty of shite even in those days.
(& I thought "the day the music died" usage was quite witty, myself) Sulk.

Re: Where are you going tonight?
Just got back from London after watching The Stone Roses there last night. Not quite as good an atmosphere as at the Heaton park gig I went to. Also, Johnny Rotten's band is shite.

Mudhoney were dull as mud mixed with honey. Support act, the Meat Puppets, were absolutely superb! Wish they'd have played for longer.
Went watching Todd Rundgren at the Ritz last night and it was the most bizarre gig I've ever been to. Weird techno-rock vibes played with an electronic drum kit, a guitar pedalled to sound like a keyboard and plenty of pre-programmed synthesizers. Hard to describe. I was stood open-mouthed for about 80% of it. Crazy.

Finally made it tonight and couldn't agree more. the first half was good, 2nd half amazing. Going to order la Vie en Rose and download some songs. Didn't know about her links with the likes of Montand and Aznavour.William the White wrote:It got better and better as the play went on... If you speak French fluently I think you might find the accent strays a little, but not in any really disturbing way... Piaf led a mad life, one with more sorrow than joy, you suspect, and the play doesn't shirk this... But still, she has no regrets... all the best brilliant songs are there, and this actress sure can sing... you'll enjoy, I suspect. Post and let us know!LeverEnd wrote:Let me know how it was. Great performance, touching, funny and tragic. Dragged some friends along who were slightly reluctant and they all loved it too.

Something about French music that appeals highly. Now you've got me off looking for Charles Trennet doing La Mer.LeverEnd wrote: Finally made it tonight and couldn't agree more. the first half was good, 2nd half amazing.
