The Nat statue is supposed to be in a memorial garden of sorts isn't it? Could stick something tasteful up there.

I'm not sure how a minute's silence would 'cheapen it all'.

I would imagine most posters on here had a family member at that game, my grandfather was. But I think that minute's silences / applauses should be left to more meaningful anniversaries such as every ten years. I like the idea of a plaque in the memorial garden though.

Yep, my paternal grandparents were both there, in the Wing Stand.
As usual in these debates, adversarial point-scoring tends to drown out sensible comment, but again I find myself nodding along to BL3:

I can understand those who wouldn't want to have a minute's silence every year, but really it's not that much to ask. Certainly there should be a memorial (small, tasteful) at the Reebok, and it would make sense to have it near the Nat statue. The Natue, if you will.BL3 wrote:I've always thought that the disaster should be recognised more publicly but we definately shouldn't go down the route of numbers on shirts, that's just commercialising grief. However it would be appropriate for the players to wear black armbands and to observe a minute's silence before kick-off at the home game nearest the tragedy, if only to educate those BWFC supporters who don't know anything about the disaster.

This is probably as close to a definitive truth on the matter as we'll get.bobo the clown wrote: Maybe in those days, only a year after a 6 year global war life was tougher and, horribly, a little cheaper. Certainly less in-your-face media.
I do think that it would perhaps be fitting to have a more prominent memorial to those who died, but then its not going to bring any of them back, so I'm not exactly jumping up and down to see it happen.
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.

They have the book of remembrance in a glass display unit outside the main entrance of the West stand..Dave Sutton's barnet wrote:Yep, my paternal grandparents were both there, in the Wing Stand.

Small, understated and quietly dignified... And not one bit mawkish

Small, understated and quietly dignified is exactly to my taste, maybe a little surprised that some seem unaware of it's existence.boltonboris wrote:

There you go, I didn't know that (I rarely go round that side of the ground). Thanks Boris (and BWFC).

Maybe it's because it doesn't have a wall of flowers and teddy bears and cards the height of Everest and the length of the Atlantic around it. You know, just to show how testosterone our grief is in comparison to other more mundane grief.

It tends to have bunches of flowers around it when the anniversary comes up.
And, just to go against the grain of another TW scouse bash, its much further in the past, and affecting far fewer people.

Whoa. It's fecking amazing how one's own prejudice blinds to what somebody else is saying. I wasn't referencing anything remotely scouse, I was referring to the ever increasing mountains of shite people leave at sites of special scientific grief interest, beginning, probably, with the tossers who showered the cortege of Diana on its journey down a motorway and culminating with grief tourists ttavelling especially to visit 'the scene' at Woolwich.Lord Kangana wrote:It tends to have bunches of flowers around it when the anniversary comes up.

Well, I mentioned walls of flowers, and LK replied in relation to flowers and scouse bashing, so go figure as the Yanks would say.

If you are referencing links I think it's polite to either refer directly to what the link says, or quote a relevant section, or rename the link if that information is lacking in the original barearsed URL. Just saying Enoch.

he might have been... indeed - his first paragraph certainly was...Lost Leopard Spot wrote:Well, I mentioned walls of flowers, and LK replied in relation to flowers and scouse bashing, so go figure as the Yanks would say.
the second paragraph - the one you responded to, though - much more ambiguous..
"and" - sounds like - "and while I am here" (having responded to LLS)...
"another TW scouse bash" doesn't sound personally directed.. it sounds more general to me...
just offering you a way not to be offended is all!
