Re: The "Nothing to see here"Transfer thread
I'd be delighted if we could say we had Rhodes in our team next year. I'd be astounded, and very worried if we paid £9m to get him there. If it came to Spearing and Dawson, or Rhodes, for example, there's only one choice.

Dan, ever considered that we have everything you'd want in a hard working forward who can cause hassle in the opponents half and hold up the ball in the fantastic at this level David N'Gog?
Or did you just want to say Rhodes would be a shite buy to try and have an edgy opinion that basically looks completely stupid, or to troll people?

I would agree with you, Spearing and Dawson over a £9m Rhodes. However, as Dingles still owe a large chunk of his fee to Huddersfield I think any team could get Rhodes for considerably less than £9mPrufrock wrote:I'd be delighted if we could say we had Rhodes in our team next year. I doubt it to be honest. Venkys won't risk further anger from their fans selling Rhodes on the cheap.TKIZ! wrote:I would agree with you, Spearing and Dawson over a £9m Rhodes. I can't see then selling for less than 12M to ourselves..........
Re: The "Nothing to see here"Transfer thread
No chance. Blackburn are in trouble and need to sell Dann or Rhodes. If we offered 5.5 what they still owe Huddersfield, plus future incentives we would have a chance of a deal. They took a gamble on him last year to try and get promotion and it didnt pay off.BWFC_Insane wrote:I doubt it to be honest. The manager has been told all pre season games must break even money wise. Wycombe paid for their coach travel to the friendly last week according to Nixon. Big problem over in Venky land.

Nixon knows his stuff about us. I'm not so convinced he's as clued up on Rovers anymore.ChrisC wrote:No chance. Blackburn are in trouble and need to sell Dann or Rhodes. I work with a pretty ITK Blackburn fan who is very well connected with the in the know folk on their forum, the ones who went out to India to meet Venkys etc. He's convinced that Venkys have put a £14M price tag on Rhodes head. That would tie in with Nixon saying today that when we asked Blackburn the price quoted for Rhodes was 'more than double what we'd pay'. The rumour is that Venkys are trying to run a tighter ship but base it around Rhodes rather than sell him.
Now that's just rumour and speculation like everything else. But it does tie in with other things coming out on the subject.

A second-tier side paying over £5m for one player would still be nuts!
We've only ever sold, what, two players for more than that? And bought two? After ten years in the prem. Madness.

Yep. And this argument that he is worth it if he scores loads of goals cos it would lead to promotion is flawed on two levels for me.Prufrock wrote:A second-tier side paying over £5m for one player would still be nuts!

1) is that for such a high price he'd have to do more than get you up, he'd have to perform in the top flight. Otherwise you have a very expensive player and nowhere to go with him.
2) He scored a lot of goals for Blackburn last season and they were closer to the bottom than the top.

That might tend to suggest those around him in the Blackburn team weren't performing too well? One man, however good or expensive he is doesn't make a team. The others have to chip in a bit too.....I think...?BWFC_Insane wrote: Yep. BWFC_Insane wrote:Dan has a point though. Rhodes has played one season in the championship and his price appears to be £9M plus. More than we paid for Anelka, a player who'd played at the top of the game, done it in various leagues and proven his ability at international level.TKIZ! wrote:Rhodes only known for his goal scoring.........Oh dear Dan.
Did you think the same of Anelka, Klasnic? Would you have said the same about Andy Walker?
We need a goal scorer, a predator. Hard working forwards are alright but if they don't score goals we're not getting promoted. Simple enough
To pay that for Rhodes who has had one championship season would be a risk. A massive risk.
Beckford and Rhodes goalscoring records at Leeds and Huddersfield are virtually identical. What if Rhodes has a season or two where his goals dry up a bit? It's happened to many before. Then you have a very expensive player who you can't shift.
It is a risk. And entirely different to buying Anelka.
Not saying we shouldn't buy him, because we need a goalscorer. It's just the price that seems madness to me. There are no guarantees he will maintain form. And there is not enough history from him yet to pay over the odds at this stage IMO.

I'm stunned that it's forming any part of this transfer discussion.
We are not, will not and were never even close to signing Rhodes. Blackburn wouldn't sell him on the cheap and they sure as hell wouldn't sell him to us, even if we had that kind of money available - which we don't!

I thought it was just a flash in the pan rumour, where some journalist gets the wrong end of the stick, yet it persists. I find it very very unlikely but wonder if Dougie has had a cheeky word somewhere along the line. There must be something in it, however tenuous.Harry Genshaw wrote:I'm stunned that it's forming any part of this transfer discussion.

We all give a fvck what the money is spent on though. I mean if we had endless amounts it wouldn't matter.boltonboris wrote:If the money's there, who gives a fvck.Prufrock wrote:A second-tier side paying over £5m for one player would still be nuts!

But say we spent big on Rhodes, likelihood is that even were we to go up, that we wouldn't be spending big again for a while. Question is whether for the money it would take to get Rhodes there are better players out there. I think there are. Perhaps those options wouldn't be open to us as a championship club but still the value doesn't seem there.

If the money is there, it's no problem.
If it's not there, we won't buy him. feck me, we're fans, not club accountants.

That's not the issue though. Plenty clubs suffered from big buys that didn't work out and they end up making a massive loss on them.boltonboris wrote:If the money is there, it's no problem.

There is a question about whether in our current situation we should be spending that much, or whether we should wait and hope for promotion and better value.....

Again. If we have the money, what is the problem?
Second point. In my opinion, we need regular goals as we can't keep clean sheets. No goalscorer = no promotion.
£9m to massively increase our chances of pocketing £100m? I'll take a punt, thanks.

Re: The "Nothing to see here"Transfer thread
All this "I wouldn't pay such and such for a player" or "I wouldn't sell such and such for less than X amount" bores me to tears.. How do YOU know what that player is worth? Without knowing exactly the terms of the contract, the managers plans, the potential sell on etc. We don't know any of those things and quite honestly, I don't give a shit either. I support Bolton Wanderers. I don't work for them, I don't have a financial interest in them other than my ticket price. I just want to see the best players we can afford. If we can't afford them, we don't get them.
