Went to Yugoslavia in the early 90's and found that we were treated like Royalty whilst the Krauts were largely ignored - a massive culture shock for us compared to the attitude in Spain and the Balearics at the time. I was sure that history had a part in their attitude, reinforced one lunchtime by a waiter in a Vrsar restaurant who ushered us past the queue of Germans at the door and sat us at at the only empty table "Did you see the church in the square during your walk today? That is where the Germans slaughtered half our village in the last war. We never forget".

The episode was a stark reminder of the power of history. My sadness at this however, was nullified by my hunger and an exceptional lunch :D

Oh dear, Magaluf in the news again today. Nothing to do with 17 year olds though, just a 31 year old Brit.
I'm just back and yes it is pretty mad with drink being so cheap but these TV programmes really focus on the negatives and destroys the regions name. I'd definitely go back next year !

Off to Milan as well as a couple of other places soon, but was thinking I'd do a day at Lake Como whilst there and was just wondering if anyone had been and knew which were the better towns around the lake to go to? There seems to be a lot...

Three different lakes, three different towns, all within easy travelling distance of each other.
Try the towns of Locarno (Lake Maggiore), Lugano (Lake Lugano), or Mennagio (on Como itself). You cannot really go wrong around there.

Thanks, I'll look into 'em.

There seems to be a highly recommended walk of about 10-11km called the green way. I reckon we'll end up doing that.

The lakes are highly recommended.

Milan has some remarkable points, though a lot which is less so. Take a couple of cans of spray paint .... I suspect graffiti is compulsory there.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

I seem to have picked a bad time to go, apparently the local Wops (I can say that, I'm half Italian) go on holiday in August and so nothing is open and the ones left behind are pissed off that they're not on holiday.

Also, if anyone has any tips of things to do in Zurich they'd also be appreciated.

If you want to get out of Milan for the day I can recommend Portofino. Lots to look at ;) and the focaccia in the shop as you head to to the main bit from the parking is awesome.

I can tell you what not to do - Don't stay at the Arabella Sheraton Atlantis. It's a damn fine hotel, like, but you'll be kept awake by neighbouring livestock. I was anyway :(

I was at Lake Como one August many years ago - the heat and humidity were so brutal that I had to head back to Switzerland sharpish.
