Just for the record, neither Cardiff nor Hull had a player which scored more than 9 league goals last season.SmokinFrazier wrote:I'd be really frustrated. I'm concerned that the lack of a natural goalscorer is going to be an issue next year too.
Also despite not having a natural goalscorer we secured 3 x top 8 finishes in the Premierleague.
Lets not get too hung up on it please.

Nixon has said several times that Bolton aren't interested in Austin at this stage. So you don't need to worry about that.SmokinFrazier wrote:It looks like we're going to sign Beckford but according to Nixon, we still have interest in Rhodes, Austin is on our shortlist and then there's this "foreign attacker" who we're in for too. I did think we needed to strengthen that area after last season but if we bring in two more strikers, I'm worried we'll have too many in our squad. We'll have N'Gog, Sordell, Davies, Eaves, Beckford, Rhodes/Austin/foreign striker and then a couple of young players on top of them, so I don't know if there's going to be a good balance there. Moritz left Palace because they wouldn't guarantee him a starting place, so that is probably an indication we'll play 4-5-1 more often than not. If that is the case, we'll have far too many strikers for one attacking role.
Even if we do sign Beckford, I think we still need another striker who is guaranteed to get goals. I don't think Beckford is good enough to get 20 a season any more, so I'm not sure what he'll bring to us. We probably need to lose a striker or two and replace them with someone like Austin or Rhodes who is guaranteed to score more than our strikers did last year.
Time is running out to make these changes though. If we end up with signing Beckford and then someone like Ameobi on loan, I'd be really frustrated. I'm concerned that the lack of a natural goalscorer is going to be an issue next year too.
The foreign attacker he is talking about is going to be used as a wide man. Same if we sign Ameobi. And we do need pace out wide. And some options.
Beckford is signing (if he ever fecking does) because he's better at scoring goals than what we have. Rhodes clearly would be a bonus. If we didn't sign a striker and waited on the hope of getting Rhodes on deadline day I'd be quite worried and I'm sure you would too.

Really? I'm genuinely curious about this.BWFC_Insane wrote:If we didn't sign a striker and waited on the hope of getting Rhodes on deadline day I'd be quite worried and I'm sure you would too.
By all accounts we're likely to be playing 4-5-1 this season. At present for that one position we have Ngog, Sordell and C. Davies, likely Beckford plus youngsters like Eaves, Wilkinson, Clough and Odelusi.
How many strikers do we actually need?
To be honest I'd rather spend the Rhodes money on Dawson and Spearing.

Ah, so now Nixon is bezzie mates with Dougie. Does this mean he's fallen out with Coyle?BWFC_Insane wrote:I'm sure that Nixon has been told by Dougie that a deal is agreed and Moritz is in to sign.

But a list of strikers doesn't tell the whole story.
If we are playing 1 up that rules out Sordell (who is fairly shite anyhow) leaving us with one from Craig Davies, Eaves and NGog. Confident that between them they'd fire us to promotion?
Not so sure myself. Ngog would be great alongside a goalscorer. Davies would be great alongside a goalscorer, probably. Eaves....unknown.
Beckford has goals in his game potentially. I'd rather have that than not to be honest.
The argument is then after that, assuming it happens, do you go for Rhodes or spend money on Spearing and Dawson, assuming both options are mutually exclusive. A big assumption but not a silly one. Eddie Davies may prefer the sell on value Rhodes could offer.
Personally I can see both sides. I don't think Rhodes is great value, but we've been there and argues that. I'm not 100% convinced on needing Spearing. Not convinced we don't either, but more a maybe in my view.
Dawson we do need, but is he available?
Look through the squad and assuming Beckford and Moritz DO sign. We are weak in wide areas both left full back and wide men on either side. And weak at centre half. The rest looks ok to me, without being really inspiring anywhere.
Ultimately teams that go up often look more than the sum of their parts. Allardyces promotion side here was an example of that. Hopefully that will be the case this time and I hope it is, because we aren't going to have the most talented squad in the division, not by some distance in my view.

Re: The "Nothing to see here"Transfer thread
Seems we might have transferred more than player. I read today that Bolton have signed a three-year deal with Radio Manchester for match broadcasts. Wonder what happened to Tower Radio? This isn't the first time this has happened.

That's patently not true, clearly though there are some people better at keeping confidences than others. I hope he rewards them well.BWFC_Insane wrote:I don't really care. He knew about Moritz before anyone else. So somehow he found out.

It would have been the Moritz story but it didn't make the paper so he broke the story last night.Harry Genshaw wrote:Since Nixon is apparently never wrong, who was it in the Mirror this morning that we've surprisingly signed?Michael Ricketts P45 wrote:Nixon has stated the we've made a surprise signing that will be announced tomorrow. I enjoyed listening to Tower last season. Not polished radio by any means but I felt it was endearingly shit if nothing else. It suited occasions like us getting turned over at Peterborough quite nicely.

Nixon said he would be at the club today. For medical and talks around signing. These things take time.Harry Genshaw wrote:But we haven't signed himChrisC wrote:It would have been the Moritz story but it didn't make the paper so he broke the story last night.Harry Genshaw wrote:Since Nixon is apparently never wrong, who was it in the Mirror this morning that we've surprisingly signed?Michael Ricketts P45 wrote:Nixon has stated the we've made a surprise signing that will be announced tomorrow. DOUGIE Freedman would be happy to see Jermaine Beckford's move from Leicester City costing Wanderers a packet.
The Jamaica international striker will be unveiled at the Reebok tomorrow after weeks of negotiations between the two clubs.
Freedman revealed that the deal will involve a small up front fee – but could escalate in cost if the former Leeds United and Everton man helps Wanderers into the Premier League with a hatful of goals.
“Jermaine's deal was done as of about three hours ago, so in the morning it will be announced,” Freedman said. “We've all worked very hard – even Leicester, to be fair – coming to a deal.
“We feel it's a good deal for the football club. He's a proven goalscorer, I know his character well and the deal is done on a performance-basis.
“For the deal we've got it's an absolute no-brainer for this football club for where we are right now.
“There is a very small fee involved up front but it's tied in with promotion and how many goals he scores – that's how Leicester will get their money. So if we benefit then Leicester benefit and that's why it has taken a little bit longer.
“I think Phil Gartside has done very well in making sure this deal went well for the football club.”
Re: The "Nothing to see here"Transfer thread
Sounds good, and fair play to Beckford if he's taken a drop to come here as reported. I think he'll do well. If he can get an understanding with Ngog they could destroy teams. A big if I know, but the potential is there.
