I don't want to be a sore loser, but did it change the direction of the shot?

Re: Where are they now - Gareth Farrelly
It actually puts it back on course for the bottom corner. Its hard to say, it deflects only a handful of feet from Farelly's boot, but I would suggest the angle Rankine is at, that it would have ended up more centrally on the goal (foot or two) had it not been a deflection.
But lets not change the parameters - the question was a simple "was it deflected or not?". And it was. No best of 3's.

Looking at it again, if anything it probably keeps it down.

In fact, the more I see it, the more it looks like he hits it high and right, and it goes low and left after the contact.

Anyhow, I've just seen this, month's late however, but I'm calling you on it Monty.Montreal Wanderer wrote:Hmmm, the McWhirter brothers or a doctoral student at Bolton University? Tough call. Mind you, the game described at Turton bears little resemblance to today's game. I expect there are village greens still used for events where teams get together and kick a ball around all day. However, from the dates given Chapelton predates Sheffield, though they are based on recollections written up in the 1870s.Bruce Rioja wrote:Well I'm not sure what to believe then.Montreal Wanderer wrote:I was just quoting wiki quoting the Guinness Book of Records. However, I would read it to mean the oldest ground still in use. Footie was surely played on older pitches.Bruce Rioja wrote:The oldest football pitch in the world is the one that Old Boltonians play on in Chapeltown, isn't it? Sheffield FC were the world's first club though (are they now called Hallam FC then?)
Edit: Ah right, I see (I think). I take it Hallam were the first to get a ground organised.

The game at Turton was one of the first in the country to use the new FA rules based on the Sheffield rules and therefore one of the first ever clubs and certainly the oldest pitch in existence that was a football pitch.
Bramall Lane is older but was primarily a cricket pitch on which football was ocassionally played. I'll write a history one day and stick it on the Home page.

As a little cherry on top of this particular cake, I have the highlights of our 2-1 win at The Toast Rack recorded straight after the main event. A very satisfying day indeed.

My mind has blown.
In an obviously less serious context, it really supports those opinions about convictions based solely on eye-witness reports being potentially unsafe!
Next folk will be saying that glorious chip away at Highbury was actually a cross

We only have you're word for this, Pal. I don't see any corroborative evidence anywhere!Lord Kangana wrote:In fact, the more I see it, the more it looks like he hits it high and right, and it goes low and left after the contact.

Re: Where are they now - Gareth Farrelly
I am comfortable that anyone watching the live recording and the Big Match highlights will see:
1) The camera angle from behind showing a deflection
2) Clive Tydlsely, at the end of the first half when the goal is replayed (showing the from directly behind camera angle) saying "ooh, that was a deflection"
3) Andy Townsend and the bore machine discussing, at the end of the game, the (and I quote) "wicked deflection".
Ergo, it was deflected. So ner.

Just recorded a video on my phone. Uploading it nowBruce Rioja wrote:So no corroborative evidence whatsoever then? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

Still hard to say, but would say it did take a deflection as Gaz hits it high and it goes in low.

First of the replays - the side view- showed it clearly. Without doubt a deflection. Nailed on, 100% certain, without a doubt, absolutely.

Obviously Bruce has less grey cells than most at his age.

Do not trust atoms. They make up everything.
