He came round to mine with an "I don't know, you techno-phobes" face on him expecting it to be sorted in about 3 minutes. He was here almost 2 hours. Being a nerd he was not going to be beaten. He had to reconfigure things, re-set up other things, and swear ... very, very quietly ... rather a lot.
He sorted it in the end and it's been totally perfect since then, but fck knows what he did.

mine works well - i now have two - one attaches to internet to the x-box so that I can watch netflix - the other attaches my eldest son's super-massive-games-computer to the internet so he can play WoW in glorious HD and top speed... no buffering on either... the wireless is shoite through the ceiling - i suspect it is lead-lined!

Even better Bruce
I heard they'd recently introduced faster broadband speeds in my area. Went to see what I could get and how much...
285 quid for 100mbps. Not including phone or anything else
Think I'll give it a miss!

I've just spunked my lot in with B fecking T and they've just upgraded me to this fibre optic stuff (which is why I had to move the router to downstairs) and have to say (quietly) I'm impressed.

I'll be looking into getting that when we eventually return. Can't wait to be able to get proper telly again. We pay over a 100 a month for broadband and tv repeats with a recording facility that either records the wrong programme, misses the start or most often misses the end off. They also take a movie in English that has subtitles for any foreign bits and remove the subtitles so you don't know what is going onBruce Rioja wrote:CrikeyAbdoulaye's Twin wrote:Even better Bruce![]()

a) what's happened to the start button?
b)where the feck do I now find stuff, like for example, the Character Map?
c) and last but not least, how the fxck do you turn it off without a start button?
What are these people trying to do to me, why can't they leave stuff alone? Arrrrghhh
Good luck...
I eventually managed to wrestle GoogleEarth and Google Chrome onto the effing computer. Once I had chrome on searching for sites became a damn sight easier.
I had a look at your start8 thing AT, but in the end went with something from these bods > http://www.classicshell.net" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (which is free!)
Here is a site that explains it ... http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/wind ... shell.html
with a bit of blurb...

The Metro interface, the menu and all that useless would-be modern tablety crap can be undone by using the Classic Shell. You get your sane desktop back and can now focus on enjoying many windows open at the same time and no flipping 180 degrees to access the menu or worrying about huge tiled applications designed for morons.

I looked at Classic Shell too. Can't remember why, but the review I read said Start8 was better. Either way, as long as it works it saves blowing a gasket. The Start8 folk do something else to take the apps into a window like proper programs. Haven't tried it yet, but for stuff like Skype I reckon it'll be handy.Lost Leopard Spot wrote: Well I fecked about for hours last night battling windows fxckin 8.

One good thing about Windows 8 is the version I have allows me to do backups over the network. With Windows 7 you had to pay a shed load more for that functionality.

I noticed something about backup when I managed to find the windows explorer and eventually found the C Drive - I didn't explore that bit, I shall do so tonight.Abdoulaye's Twin wrote: One good thing about Windows 8 is the version I have allows me to do backups over the network. Re: Technology Thread.
To be honest, the only reason why I chose Classic Shell over start8 was that one was free and the other cost some tiny amount. How stingy is that?Abdoulaye's Twin wrote:I looked at Classic Shell too. Can't remember why, but the review I read said Start8 was better. .

Re: Technology Thread.
I'm due upgrade from Galaxy S2 but I wonder how much marginally better can S4 be vs the cheaper 1 year renew options O2 have.
Big good quality screen, 8mb camera, enough storage, latest OS on it.. These are the things you used to buy phones to improve on but I doubt the difference is as great as it was when smartphones were getting big.
My battery went on it about 8 months ago but I just got a new better battery. Everyone I know with an iPhone is constantly out of battery and cracking their screens, **** that.
Could anyone convince me to upgrade?

Re: Technology Thread.
Maybe upgrade to the S3 which must be cheaper. A lot of the new facilities on tje S4are a bit experimental and a few i know have switched them off (eye tracking being an example. Possible a great idea but so for from what you are used ti that it's weird).
It does offer 4g if that's important ... but again at a cost.
I'll leave the eye-phone peeps to comment on those ... through their broken screens.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Re: Technology Thread.
Fair do's! When I saw them when they came out I thought the S3 was getting on the verge of being too big for a pocket, which is why this S4 mini appealed, but I've not been to the shop to handle them and compare.bobo the clown wrote:Maybe upgrade to the S3 which must be cheaper. See all that eye-tracking and stuff is what I mean, the innovations aren't adding what they used to. True that 4g would be the thing to upgrade for but I can't be arsed changing networks so will wait for O2 to roll theirs out.
I'll have a look, as usual faced with about 100 different options in the UPGRADE SHOP or whatever it is.
