I think you're all just knee jerking against Coyle. Fact remains he did better with the squad that Megson left him whilst he was allowed to keep it. When he was forced to reduce the budget, by amongst many other things paying off Danny Shittu,he did much worse. Its really easy to throw around terms like knee jerk without ever addressing the evidence. Coyle's team had won promotion with him at burnleyl. what sane reason wouldn't he have to bring them with him? Sticking with failure once the rot sets in is not an exclusive Owen Coyle trait. Football is awash with cronyism. Some get away withit, some don't.

There is a big difference between employing "football friends" in key positions which they are broadly qualified for.

And employing a load of "football friends" into positions they do not have suitable experience for.

Anyhow, he did a great job of reducing the budget. So much so he added £10M to the wage bill he inherited. #whaddaguy

Now we're back on track - and if I may set the cat amongst the pigeons by suggesting a reason beyond cronyism - is it possible that he's employed him because of his time (and therefore contacts) in America?* Even beyond that, they've identified the (quite large) Borough of Bolton on their doorstep as a possible recruiting ground for youngsters (I'm sure Wigan, like every club around is desperate to comply with financial fair play) and he is an acceptable face to approach (understandably sceptical) parents? Given that I'm sure Dave would really like his cash back?

I appreciate it may be that it was just the first thought that popped into his head, but as shit as he proved here, I can't imagine that he just picked up the phone without a thought. Even if the the thought was rubbish.

He may well have all that reasoning. If he'd appointed him as scout it could be understandable.

Chief Scout? Surely that is a job for wisened old greying men from Yorkshire who have been there and seen it all, and send young scouts like McGinlay off, woggle in hand to get their kite badge using only a box of matches and a shoelace?

I too thought it might have something to do with his time in the US or his spouting off in the BN that first alerted Owne to Super John's boz-eye for a a young player but I think it is more likely that he fancies having him around the club for a reason.

When ever there's a crisis at New Burnden Park the Radio Manchester swtichboard always goes into meltdown with people saying 'I think John McGinlay should be at the club...in some capacity.' Although they never elaborate on exactly what that 'capacity' should be.

Obviously Owen's had the same idea.

In a nutshell I think it's the word 'Chief' that's raising eyebrows because if he's the top man then who the flaming Christ has he got working under him?

I like the sound of that but tbh OC could do an unbelievable job of that without Super John, just think how bad they could be with John scouting and Coyle picking the formations.
