Re: Don't tell Dougie - It's nostalgia!
News to me. I think I've referred to Reid as a dinosaur or somesuch, but having been brought up on my dad's tales of Reidy, I don't think I'd ever call him a c*nt. Unlike Megson, who I would. Sorry, its a bit like tourettes when his name is mentioned.
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

He was a manager you frequently used as a reason why not to sack Coyle.Lord Kangana wrote:News to me. Anyhow I met Todd a few times. Really nice bloke, totally and utterly out of his depth.
Re: Don't tell Dougie - It's nostalgia!
it can't be Peter Reid - because LK has never called him a "shit manager" nor has LK ever called Reid "worse than even Coyle"... he has been uncomplimentary, but has never gone that far.. the search goes on...Dave Sutton's barnet wrote:Surely he can't be referring to Megson. Sunderland got 105 in 98/99 under Peter Reid.

An absolutely superb coach, I'm told by one that was there, but a terrible man-manager. Unlike Rioch, who was the exact opposite, knew it, and kept well out of the coaching side of it.BWFC_Insane wrote:I met Todd a few times. Really nice bloke, totally and utterly out of his depth.

Maybe you could get Megson tinnitus as a cure for Megson Tourette's.Lord Kangana wrote:News to me. That wouldn't be very nice!
And Bruce, as I recall quite few of our North East signings were aware of Toddy's ability as a coach - as I recall Peter Beardsley reco'd Tomo to come here for his coaching. It was a pity he couldn't keep or replace Porterfield. Or indeed for us to keep Rioch with him. But that's football.

Aye I reckon he was a great coach. And he clearly knew how to pick out a player. But he was Taylor to Rioch's Clough.Bruce Rioja wrote:An absolutely superb coach, I'm told by one that was there, but a terrible man-manager. Re: Don't tell Dougie - It's nostalgia!
On ability Curcic and Sellars were probably the two most gifted players we had at the time. My point is that were both weak as piss.coffeymagic wrote:Just rewind a bit...
What would you have done? Curcic was the best player at the club by a country mile and Sellers was a more than able pro.BWFC_Insane wrote:Loyal White wrote:
...he [Todd] will always be the manager who pitted Curcic and Sellars against Keane and Butt.
This was Manchester United we were playing here.
Branagan, Green, Coleman, Fairclough, Phillips, Curcic, Sellars, Thompson, Blake, Lee and Daffy De Freitas.
Versus. (Eventual champions for the how many'th time?)
Schmeichel, P Neville, Irwin, Bruce, Pallister, Beckham, Butt, Keane, Cole, Cantona, Giggs.
I can't remember who wasn/wasn't injured but who would you have replaced Tomo, Lee, Sellars and Curcic with? Andy Todd? Gerry Taggart? Was McAteer still at the club?
Whoever Todd would have picked that day would have been on the losing side. Would it have been different if that early (only) effort from Sasa not rattled the bar? Yeah, it would have been 1-6.
Like you I cant remember injuries etc, but during that season we had played Andy Todd, Fairclough, Mark Patterson and even Scott Green in midfield. Less ability? No doubt, but at least we would have had the slightest potential to win the ball back.

How would Beardo know about Toddy's coaching, chum?Lord Kangana wrote:And Bruce, as I recall quite few of our North East signings were aware of Toddy's ability as a coach - as I recall Peter Beardsley reco'd Tomo to come here for his coaching. We replaced Porterfield with Browny - not a poor coach but young and probably deferred to Todd; fine when things are going well but not in the bad times. Idealistic manager needing experienced coach... Hmmm...

Re: Don't tell Dougie - It's nostalgia!
That news comes from a friend in the north east from many moons ago. Toddy being a Mackem is well known, and highly regarded, in those parts - at the time Tomo was recovering from that bad accident that a few of that young talented group from Newcastle were involved in (I forget the exact names, but wasn't Robbie Elliot also part of the group?). Anyhoos, Tomo had a few offers, but, so the story went from said source that Beardsley (newly back in Newcastle's squad) recommended The Wanderers to him because of the double act of Rioch and Todd - Bruce (already known as The Sergeant Major wasn't he?) for keeping young players on the straight and narrow and Toddy being, ahem, good at coaching the young 'uns.
If you're asking for concrete evidence, I have none to hand, but I recall a repetition of the story somewhere or other in an old programme or somesuch.

[quote="Dave Sutton's barnet Fanzines, eh? Might have to explain it to some of our younger viewers.[/quote]
I was actually thinking a bit back that there must be a market for Fanzines. I know it's all about the intornets these days but I reckon there's still people who'd like to actually pick something up to flick through in the pub, at half time or on the bus on the way home.
And to keep for ever in a tin in the loft just in case.....

I'm not asking you to 'think outside the box' I just wish you'd have a rummage around in it once in a while.

I have a vague and distant memory that a few years ago there was a paper publication of he best bits of TW handed out before a game as a kind of advert for the site... it included one of the TW Spy's pieces and a couple of the articles from the front page IIRC...

It was always hard trying to be topical. Even in the old days 4 weeks was a long time in football and our front covers (which had to be the first thing to get cracking on) we always out of date by the time the mag came out forcing last minute caption alterations or hastily scribbled rewrites.
Match reports? Nah, wouldn't bother with them but a mag that contained opinion and editorial plus the derranged views of facebookers and tweeters might still have a niche.

DSB - Twas ever thus eh?
Still nice while it lasted. I think we can all agree that the best was Wanderers Worldwide although our 'Guide to Burnden Park' and our 'MAD' style Wembley/Toilet 'fold-in' was up there with anything.

Still regularly think of that Guide to Burnden - Irritating Kids Who Just Kick Cans All Game, Annoyingly Massive Sun That Just Refuses To Set etc

I have made a rod for my own back haven't I?
I think when I made my point about spilling and punctuashun I absolved the odd 'typo' on message boards and texts messages.
However if I was going to put something out officially then I wouldn't do so until every word was checked and double checked.
Although I might not have said that at the time.
Spelling?
BhhhhhHhhhhhhhhhhHHHHHHH!
