Re: The "Nothing to see here"Transfer thread
Wolves had players like Ebanks Blake, Kevin Doyle around their bench a fair bit last year... Quite often players who fail in the prem will also fail in the Championship. We need players who will fight for the team and hopefully the likes of Eaves will do that

No, but I wonder how much difference a 15M player like Zaha makes?plymouth wanderer wrote:Crystal Palace,Did they spend loads?
My point is that the three relegated teams have ended up with strong squads, stronger by some distance than ours and Wolves and Blackburns were last season. In comparison.
Frankly they are my main worry right now. Quite plausible that one of them might come up short but I'm struggling to see us, as we are finish above the three of them.
Not saying we have to spend loads, we don't have it.
But as Dougie keeps saying we are short as it stands of having a promotion squad.

Go on then how have they got better subs then us? Out of all of them benches I'd pick Mcmanaman(still unproven) and Austin(crocked) and possibly Dunne
Who'd you have outta Zaha and Rhodes

Bit scary. They had Andy Johnson and Zamora up front.
Wigan had Fortune, Gomez, McCann and McManaman on their bench yesterday.
Reading had Pobgrebnyak, McAnuff on their bench.
These are the depth of squads we are going up against this year.
you said similar things about the ace-ness of our squad this time last year - opinions that you later revised dramatically... are you sure you are not just getting swept along with the hype again??
also - coyle being such a cancerous feckwitted loser - surely he'll destroy Wigan - so we won't have to worry about them...

Reading probably have the least individual quality but the best team out of the three and some strength in depth.
We are playing Keith Andrews who we'd like to replace but even then we don't have another central midfield player fit in the squad. The only cover as it stands is a teenager who is injured.
We are weak in comparison, no doubts about it.

Frankly I'm more interested in what we've got.
Our manager has sent very clear messages out that he thinks we are short in numbers and quality.
I think it's fairly obvious we are short. The worry is that one in one out may help the quality but where will the cover be for a 46 game season?

Re: The "Nothing to see here"Transfer thread
Dougie has done exceptionally well in the market this summer. Getting free transfers in.thebish wrote:^ dougie fails in the transfer market??
But since being here he's spent £800K on Medo and a couple of hundred thousand on Craig Davies.
He's being asked to rebuild with very little. Which is fair enough. Equally I think it's fair enough to point out that we are very light in certain areas and we are going to be hoping rather than expecting as it stands in my opinion. But seemingly the managers opinion too.
Re: The "Nothing to see here"Transfer thread
I suspect dougie knew the financial climate he was taking on - and he took it on. I have every faith he will do a good job. I expect him to be seriously challenging for promotion.BWFC_Insane wrote:Dougie has done exceptionally well in the market this summer. I DO remember you declaring our squad to be premier all-stars who should walk the league. are you sure you're not just doing the same with Wigan and QPR??
I also am still baffled why you think Coyle is suddenly going to be so ace...

Strong squads can do well in this division even with bad management. It is evident that Wigan have better players than we did last season.
Let us not forget that the two players who are widely cited to have turned us round last season aren't here. Before that inspired run we were 20th. Easy to forget that. And as Plymouth points out, minus Holden and Mark Davies.
Work to do. Dougie keeps saying it as well. You seem to ignore that.

funnily enough - not on the wind up - just baffled that you think coyle can easily manage a team to promotion given what you have said about him.
not sure what I am ignoring? I am happy to trust dougie to get on with the job and manage what is a very decent squad into (at least) the playoffs.. I suspect he will pick up a couple of players on loan when they come available - and I am not convinced he has given up on Dawson or spearing...
i guess i am just a bit more positive about dougie's abilities than you seem to be...
what you now describe as "evident" - you also adamantly asserted about our squad at the start of last season - you argued til you were blue in the face that they should walk this league - that they were a premiership squad - and anyone who couldn't see that was simply self evident was (basically) bonkers.
you later revised that opinion saying that you were overcome with the hype. isn't it possible that you are doing the same thing now - except with wigan and qpr's squads?
we've only had one game - i think it's a bit early to conclude that we are pretty much out of the race because of our squad deficiencies at this stage...

Last season you were big on how ace our players are on paper and we should be in the automatic promotion places. This was later revised to our players are mostly shit and lack bottle. Fair enough. Plenty thought we'd be ace and revised their opinion.
Where I roll my eyes is that you know far less about the squads of QPR et al than our own, yet you are so certain they are so much better. Only a few months ago QPR were full of over paid failures with no desire or bottle. Now they are superstars waiting to walk over the Championship. Does this not strike you as more or less identical thinking to that of this time last year?
Lets look at the facts...
We have what most of us will agree are 2 full backs that can defend far better than last seasons options.
Pratley seems to be improved, even if still limited.
We have a striker that has a history of scoring more goals than any striker we've had since Anelka.
We lack a creative spark much of the time. Moritz has been brought in with a view to resolving this in part and we have Mavies to come back.
I would say much has been done to address the issues. They aren't all going to be solved in one window (that is not yet closed). Have a bit of faith. We may not set this division alight, but I don't think QPR et al will either. I do think we'll be better over the season than last. Whether that will be enough I don't know, but I think noticeable improvement over the season is all we can ask. We hope it is enough. Save yourself the aggro and stop swinging to the extremes of everything being great or shit.

interestingly, Harry says that he has 5 or 6 players who don't want to be there - and (he says) is obvious they don't and it causes dressing room unrest - he wants them out...
(perhaps not the best way to advertise your surplus players to the world! - but it seems all is not rosy at QPR..)

Re: The "Nothing to see here"Transfer thread
The quality of our squad has become underestimated by quite a few. We went from having a 'quality side being hindered by Coyle' to being 'a crap side getting results because of Freedman'. I've always believe we have a good first team and plenty of strength in depth. Now that Wigan, QPR and Reading have come down, we don't have the best squad in the league, like we did last year, but there are still plenty of teams who would love to start players who we don't consider good enough to start for us. Out of our starting 11 yesterday, there are only two of those players who wouldn't walk into most Championship sides, Andrews and Wheater, but both of those are unfit and I expect them to get a lot better with more game time.
Every club wants to bring in as much quality as they can but our season shouldn't rest on signing Dawson and Spearing. They'd be nice to have, and I certainly give us a higher chance of promotion with them, but they aren't absolute necessities. We still have enough depth to get by without them.
