It's incredible isn't it? 2 guys I run with occasionally are doing it today, both for the 4th time and both are in their 50s
I'll be popping down to the Beehive to watch the running this afternoon

Re: Today I'm angry about.....
It is my ambition to do this before I'm 50.
I hope it's still in Bolton when I do.
Good luck to everyone involved today. Including the Marshalls and Organisers.

Hey no worries. Because of the road closures it was difficult to get anywhere near so I gave up on it. A couple of chubby lads, eh? Best get back on it hadn't I?!Harry Genshaw wrote:Sorry fella - missed this. Hope you got to see some of it. I have often wondered about fostering - when a couple of mine move out so that we have the room! Stories like that do make you think that in the scheme of things they're not so important after all, however.
you're still a young thing and building a career and stuff - so you're probably right - BUT - i don't think there are THAT many "things" you need to have in place beyond being a good parent and having some kind of reasonable stability of circumstance to give a child what s/he really needs...
I have to say as a father of four, there is no 'time' to have children. Enjoy them whilst you're young, so you can run around with 'em? You probably don't have any money, struggle to provide for the family and miss out on promotions at work because you find it difficult to attend 2/3 week residential training courses. Wait until you have the house, career, been on exotic hols etc, and it may be a hell of a shock to your already established lifestyle. Plus who wants to be feeding and changing at all hours of night when you're 40+ ? Youngsters may mock this; but as the years go by, all too quickly; one's reserves of both energy and patience diminish considerably. 40 is the new 20? No, it's not. It's the old 40, you just imagine you're 20. Like I'm 53, but still 19 in my head. I still feel knackered though. Kids are also a lifetime thing. They don't disappear when they're 18. (As a lot of parents would wish from time to time!). They continue to drain both emotional and financial resources, and the expense grows over time. Then they have children themselves. Grandchildren. And I thought an Aston Martin was expensive............

Re: Today I'm angry about.....
I had to smile at that Il Pirate. Most of your comments are quite apt, although my wife waited until we had built our house and had the immediate resources to purchase the necessities for child rearing before she (secretly, the minx) stopped using The Pill. I was thirty before my son came along and did wonder whether we'd left it a bit late - the thought of being nigh on fifty when said son was in his late teens bothered me a bit. Daughter dear arrived about two years later; I was even more concerned. It's all worked out well but I'm glad it wasn't later.
Of course we didn't bank on promotion coming my way but, nevertheless, I did attend - only two - residential four week courses. Ducking home for a weekend was not an option as both were seven days a week exercises. Fortunately my wife is a practical, 'unfussable' lass and took my absences in her stride.
So, Crayons, each to his own. Nevertheless, there is no joy to compare with raising a child if you are that way inclined.

i succombed to reading glasses a couple of years ago - i now can't read a computer screen, stuff on food packets, books, labels - in fact pretty much anything that isn't road-sign sized... I'm a bit alarmed at the speed of deterioration since I gave in to the specs!
I have 4 pairs - and i keep them in different places for fear of doing what you have done today - there is always a pair in the car, f'rinstance - so that I can programme the satnav...

No chance with packets, jars, DVDs etc. I too am alarmed as to how completely dependent I've become.
Always had a pair at work, a pair at home and a pair in the car, but I'm a bugger for (a) breaking them and (b) leaving them behind some place. Hence, I took my work pair home for while I was off.
Will nip to Asda at lunch and pick up a pair of cheapos.

Some folk are just totally unbelieveable!!!Published: Mon, August 5, 2013
A rookie police officer has shot dead a 14-year-old boy on a New York street after he refused to drop his gun and pointed it in the direction of officers, authorities said.
Shaaliver Douse died from a single gunshot to his jaw after the confrontation in the Bronx early on Sunday morning.
Two New York Police Department officers were on foot patrol when they heard gunfire at about 3am. They found the boy with a 9mm handgun firing shots at a fleeing man, authorities said.
Police released two surveillance videos that show a person they identified as the boy, wearing a white T-shirt and jeans, fire at a group of men standing outside a bodega and then chasing after one of them. Police said he fired four shots in all. The officers identified themselves as police and ordered him to drop his weapon, authorities said.
"The officers ordered Douse to drop the gun but instead he fired another round," NYPD commissioner Raymond Kelly said at a news conference. "It is undetermined at this time whether he fired at the officers or a fourth time at the unknown male who had just run past the officers."
When he pointed his gun in their direction, one of the officers shot him, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The two officers had joined the department in January.
The boy's aunt, Quwana Barcene, told the New York Post he was an only child. "It's not fair. It was my sister's only child. You shouldn't have to bury your child," she said.
It emerged the teenager had been in trouble with the law before. He was charged in May with attempted murder after a 15-year-old boy was shot in a Bronx neighbourhood where he lived. That shooting took place two miles from where he was later killed.
He was also charged with assault, criminal possession of a weapon and menacing in connection with the incident. His prosecution was deferred, said Steven Reed, a spokesman for the Bronx District Attorney's Office. He said the office had insufficient evidence to proceed and the victim was unable to identify the gunman.
They should have shot that stupid bitch as well.

Re: Today I'm angry about.....
You see, this does make me really really angry. Because I work at a screen all day, I get free eye tests, which I take up mainly for the benefits of early warnings for the likes of glaucoma etc. Needless to say the pressure from the optition to take a pair of reading glasses is relentless. I even stopped going to one because after the eyetest they made up a pair of glasses and sent them to work (complete with bill) - which I refused to pay outright. Anyway, my vision isn't perfect, one of my eyes struggles in bad light to adjust as quickly as the other, but I can still read stuff on jars or focus on far away stuff. I was told by a friend that the focussing muscles of your eye are just like any other muscle, they deteriorate without use - so I took up simple eye exercises which just consist of focussing near then far then near then far again. Ten times a day -takes under twenty seconds.Bruce Rioja wrote:Exactly the same as me, Bish. My wife, same age, virtually same results from eyetest (the prescriptions were identical) took up reading glasses four years ago. She is now totally reliant on them and is becoming worse in her need.
Opticians probably know this and still peddle the notion that reading glasses are for everone. It's lining their pockets is what it's really about.

Re: Today I'm angry about.....
I am angry about being banned from xbox live days after spending £80 on things online.
I wouldn't care if I deserve to be banned. I had 3 complaints on Saturday afternoon within the space of half an hour from people saying I quit games early, when in truth, it was them that quit the games. All because their beloved teams (Villa, Newcastle and Spurs) were being beaten online on fifa by some chump playing with a Championship outfit!
My blood is boiling, I might aswell have put £80 down a grid.
