It reminds me of the old Boston Braves baseball refrain. Baseball pitchers need at least three days rest between starts and the Braves had only two decent pitchers, Warren Spahn and Johnny Sain. The other two days when they did start were more or less guaranteed losses. So the faithful cheered: "Spahn and Sain and pray for rain". Actually with rainouts and doubleheaders the two of them ended the season winning 8 games in 12 days to give the Braves their last pennant.

Poor way to win. The Aussies played this test really well and had us on the rack.

Don't agree. Winning any way is ok. Fact is they has 150 odd overs at us and took 13 wickets.

Need 20 to win.

Too long in Britain we've had gallant losers at various sports. Aussies would revel in any sort of win and did.

So should we. Winning mentality and all.

Still prefer to watch a game of cricket than rain dances or the like.

Nah, sorry, we've been beating the Aussies comfortably up to now. We shouldn't need the rain, and more pertinently, a good Aussie victory may have dispelled any complacency we had. Its sport after all, not meteorology.

But we didn't actually win anything in this test. Granted, we didn't lose it but it was more because the weather intervened than anything else. Now they have no chance to compete for the Ashes, just the tests. Takes the edge off it all for me.

The Ashes today remained in the hands of England. I don't really care that it was rain that did that for us.

Just so I'll understand: We go chest to chest with our greatest cricket rivals in the number one contest in all cricket (traditionally), something we've waited a year for...............and we pray for rain? Really?

We do when we're 2-0 up, with 3 to go.

I'm not convinced we were 'saved' by the weather though. I just don't think they'd have got the wickets they did get if it wasn't for the weather. Draw the most likely option rain or shine, IMO.

fine lines... had it remained cloudy and a bit damp - which causes the ball to swing more and they had skittled us (having got to bat for 2 days in glorious sunshine themselves) would you have said the weather won it for them?

hmmmm... you'd feel a little cheated if bolton beat blackburn with 2-0 courtesy of a dodgy penalty and a goal that was 3 yds off side? i suspect not!

moral substance? pah!

I would have said winning the toss proved a huge advantage had that transpired. Most games are over in a couple of hours so conditions are much the same for both teams. Test cricket taking five days can vary conditions enormously.

This. Doesn't matter how you win as long as it is fair and within the laws of the game it is not like we could of done anything about the rain.
