Malcolm Barrass RIP

Post by thebish » Mon Aug 05, 2013 11:02 am

Bolton Wanderers are saddened to hear of the death of former player Malcolm Barrass, aged 88.

Blackpool-born Barrass, an inside-forward, made 357 appearances for the club between 1945 and 1957.

He initially signed professional forms with Wanderers in 1944 having been spotting playing for Manchester Works’ team, Ford Motors.

He showed no signs of being overawed by the big step up to wartime league football and during the 1945/46 campaign netted an impressive 22 goals in 40 appearances.

During his 12-year association with Bolton he would win an FA Cup runners’-up medal against Blackpool in the famous Matthews Final in 1953.

A flurry of England international caps followed before he eventually departed for Sheffield United. He would also go onto represent Nuneaton Borough, Pwllheli and Wigan Athletic, where he later took up a player-coach role.

All at Bolton Wanderers offer their condolences to Malcolm’s family.

Was only discussing last week with my barber how that generation of players all seem to be leaving us in quick succession.

Shame.

RIP

I never remember Malc Barrass as an inside forward, before my time. . He was a stopper centre half and a decent one for Bolton. So sad to hear of his passing on. R.I.P big fella.

Another legend I heard all about in my youth has gone. RIP, and sympathy to his family.

Did not know this player but from what I have read he is a bit of a legend from a Bolton point of view.

I silent tribute is to be done at the game Saturday.....Well deserved in my opinion maybe they should put a plaque up on the Lofthouse statue garden to remember his contribution.

In fact we were asked to applaud - but not in a formal 'one minute' applause.

His family were there the PA announcer said. Hope they felt his contribution was recognised.

BTW - the PA seemed really muddy and unclear today - for once.

Did I read somwhere they'd changed PA announcers in the closed season? Not sure who he announced as our scorer, but it sounded nowt like Pratley. :D

He called him Michael Barrass, and announced Tierney as the scorer. Embarrassing. We had a perfectly good announcer.

RIP Malcolm, my old man speaks very highly of him.

Yep, the new stadium announcer had a nightmare start calling Barrass Michael Barrass instead of Malcolm and then the scorer 'Number 21 Marc Tierney'. At least he got the number right though. And yes, WtW, the audio was very poor and unclear. Hope thats a temporary thing.

Colin McGreavy was the previous stadium announcer. For reasons unknown the club decided to have a change. I found the guy yesterday to be absolutely indecipherable. I don't know whose idea it was either to have what amounted to nothing other than a random round of applause by way of tribute to Malcolm Barrass. :conf:

See "rebranding" thread.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

:D I just have and I've absolutely no idea as to why Bobo pointed me in its direction as it doesn't contain anything other than what I've just said. :conf:
