Stuff what winds me up at away days.

Post by Andy Waller » Thu Aug 08, 2013 8:01 am

This might have been covered before but it got me grumbling at Shrewsbury...

1. "_______ is a shithole, I want to go home..." + "Wanky Wanderers"

Not everywhere is a shithole. (Shrewsbury is lovely) Bolton town centre IS a shithole. I know. I've been. Also, at the moment, we're not breaking any pots on the "notwankometer" (TM)

2. Fat Frank. You can't insult anyone whilst revering a fat, possibly mentally ill, bloke in a mohican wig.

3. The same group of 40+ "I used to cause bovver in the 80's at Wrexham away" blokes who go to away games and "hilariously" sing Super John McGinley.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Walking-Down-Ma ... 1905769245" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

See cover for details.

4. Young lads filming everything on smartphones. Who cares if we get a corner and you filmed it?

That's it for now, please feel free to add anything...

PS. On the plus side, well done to Shrewsbury for picking a young kid out of our fans to be our mascot. It was a nice touch.

I admit to a wry smile at "Shrewsbury's a shit hole ...". I'd live there in a heartbeat.

I thought the whole evening was well managed by Shrewsbury FC especially the mascot but, as you say

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

My favourite was 'Fulham's a shithole...'. At first I thought it was done with a knowing nod and a wry smile. Alas, not. That does my head in.

There's not a lot that does my head in about away days though. I much prefer them to home games. Sorry.

It was a bit rubbish at Watford away when the pub which was an away pub before the game became a home pub after so we had to go wandering looking for a drink. Does that count :D?

In my opinion, yes. Especially if you had to walk quite a way to get there.

I don't get this home and away pubs business. If I'm going to a match in a town I've not been to before I research where the best pubs are, best per se. I then match up the best with the nearest to the ground (in terms of travel time, as for instance the nearest to Notts County is just over the river but it'd take hours to get to the ground so doesn't count) and choose one.
I've never yet found it to be a bother. Most people don't give a monkey's which team you support, and as I don't wear colours anyway, nobody knows. I've spent many an hour supping on 'foreign' territory without getting so much as a cross look.
That's not a leopard!

You're right about all those things being incredibly annoying.

To add to it:

5) Yer mums yer dad....

a) Looking around there are a few in our away crowd who shouldn't be calling anyone else "inbred".
b) The song doesn't even make fecking sense
c) Its so small time it really is embarassing.

6) People who go with the sole intention of berating our players, owner, manager, chairman etc. At Burnley there was virtually a fight behind me as some bloke seemingly needing some anger management went mental after about the 5th minute at everything that happened. "Fook off Eagles you soft tart" "Wheater you're a wanker, do one" "Piss off back to Blackpool Baptiste you charlie" were some of the delights we were treated to. When the Spearing chant went up "No fecking chance, Gartside you fecking wanker get your chequebook out". Just an angry angry man. But there seem quite a few that follow us away. I doubt it's just Bolton that get them but well...

7. "You're just a small town in _____"

Usually geographically incorrect.

Not specifically away but seems more obvious there, but the repeated 'Handball!' chant for the next 5 touches after a failed handball claim by the home fans. Usually followed by raucous laughter by the wags who did it. Never grows old apparently.

First time i heard that was vs Burnley (being in Blackburn) and i thought it was hilarious. the Burnley lot were really riled by it too.

alas, nowadays point 7 is absolutely valid.

Though Shrewsbury being told they were just "a small town in Wales" wasn't the worst example I've ever heard.

Their retort of Bolton being in Wigan was outrageous though. Outrageous.

The fans going 'SHHHH!' when the home fans are quiet, as though the Reebok is any louder.
''Amazing! Out of nothing Bolton are level. A quick throw, Kevin Nolan keeps play alive in the box and finds Kevin Davies on the left who lashes a shot under Oliver Kahn.''

every set of away fans is convinced they are louder than the home fans... (even that game where only one bloke turned up)

2-0 win. Maybe we should try the one fan thing.

The pissheads.

I don't man your casual (in a non-football violence sense) pisspot, its the dicks who get absolutely leathered, climbing lamposts, fountains, pissing in people's front gardens, telling old granny-and-grandad types to f-off. Usually, from about February onwards, they're topless, arms aloft, blathering some incomprehensible shit about either the IRA or German bombs. If either of those subjects have any relevance to 1) Football 2) their lives at all. Usually the types who leave St Andrew's singing "where's your famous Zulu Army?!" They wouldn't sing that if they'd ever actually seen them. Bellends.
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

The only bad point about that QF win at Brum in the cup a few year back was walking back to the station and seeming umpteen number of teenagers trying to goad the home fans into a fight. I'm guessing they wouldn't have done so if the wall of police officers wasn't there.
