Well, I don't think you can loan a player until they're 17.Bruce Rioja wrote:And? I thought we'd established that loanee's were a shit idea, that got in the way of our youth(which of course Dougie is a ninth dan mastter at, sensai)? Or conveniently forgottten now

Up front i don't know anything about the lad.
The report says he's been training with the 1st team at Chelski so I assume (dangerous I know) he must relatively up to it. If we are getting him for nothing in terms of wages I don't see an issue with getting him in to strengthen the squad, if we are covering his wages then unless DF sees him a s a genuine contender to start or play a part in a game ( not sure who he would replace mind) the money could probably better spent elsewhere IMO.

I've just checked and he is 17 in January. Perhaps this is 'work in progress' for the winter transfer window.Beefheart wrote:Well, I don't think you can loan a player until they're 17.Bruce Rioja wrote:And? And just when have you seen him?bwfcdan94 wrote:I really like Bolger (as I have mentioned before) would start him over Wheater or Knight he is very solid and a very good defender, bit of a hard case as well that always helps.

Bollocks.
Even so, you think 2 lower league competitive matches is enough to totally justify his merits on?

Bolger was woeful against Rotherham. I mean the team as a whole were pretty uninspiring but he was truly dire.
Still as far as Wheater/Knight are concerned how much longer can we flog a dead horse? I feel Freedman's comments about Baptiste being no more than a RB was made on the assumption we'd have brought in another CB by now. If we don't then I can see Mears back in the side with Baptiste shifted inwards. Mears isn't ideal but he's more than competent and has shown flashes of form.

I think it's enough to venture an opinion on a football forum where most people haven't seen him at all!!

OK, I know it's the DM, but don't shoot the messenger. Seems more likely that QPR will get him, but DM think otherwise.
Bolton hopeful of signing Chris Baird
I can't see this happening unless we end up offloading Tim Ream to Bristol City.

Not convinced by any means that Baird is what we need either!

Well, we've signed half the football nation up. All we have to do now is get em playing together. Saturday wasn't the best start. Forest played football, not sure what we were playing. Something like "Do you know who we are", I think.

I thought Baird had played most of his career at right back?throwawayboltonian wrote:What we need is a centre half who is experienced at this level, or higher, and better than Knight or Wheater. I'd say he definitely falls into that camp. I'd much rather get Dawson because he's 1) younger, and 2) slots into our team and sorts the defence out as we saw last season. But if we have an option to sign Baird on a reasonable deal, why not? I've said previously we're not in such a good position in defence to ignore players with experience on frees simply because they're "not the usual Dougie signing".BWFC_Insane wrote:Aye we have to offload first.wonka wrote:OK, I know it's the DM, but don't shoot the messenger. However if the source is the Daily Fail, I doubt it's gonna happen. Won't believe it until we hear something from e.g. Iles, who has contact with the club.
For me we need a commanding centre half who takes charge of things. I can't say I've watched Baird loads of times, but my impression (which could well be wrong) is that he is more of an Indian than a chief. A solid dependable sort but not a commanding physical presence.
Might be entirely wrong of course, just the impression I get.

Going off wiki (I know I know...) he started as a right back. Played a season at centre back for Southampton winning their player of the season award in 06-07 went to Fulham and played right back in the main but also covered central mid and centre back.throwawayboltonian wrote:Are you sure? I'm almost certain he is a centre back. He was then bumped up into a sort of holding midfielder role last season? Season before? I'd welcome correction if I am indeed wrong, but I'm sure whenever I saw him in line-ups and in game he was a CB.BWFC_Insane wrote:I thought Baird had played most of his career at right back?throwawayboltonian wrote:What we need is a centre half who is experienced at this level, or higher, and better than Knight or Wheater. Nor have I admittedly, but whenever I've seen him in matches we've played against Fulham, or on highlights, he seemed solid enough. Able to read the game etc. Wasn't he their captain at some point too?
If we can get him for a year or two at most deal on a decent wage, I say go for it. Knight and Wheater just don't cut it for me. Too similar and bring out the worst in each other
Maybe his experience will help. Though I'm not convinced we lack experience at the back. I mean Dawson came in with little experience and sorted it out. I think it is a commanding presence and a voice and ideally a reader of the game. Perhaps Baird can provide those things. I'll defer to those who have watched him more closely than I have.

Are you not thinking of Aaron Hughes?

Re: The "Nothing to see here"Transfer thread
Baird's a centre-back by trade, but after moving to Fulham he also filled a few holes - right-back and defensive midfield. We should be alright in def-mid (until the inevitable suspensions) but that versatility would be good. So would experience and organisation, although the one doesn't necessarily follow the other - Zat's played hundreds of games.
He's less than six foot tall, which is a worry these days. (Yes yes, Cannavaro, but how many others?)

On Saturday it is feasible the line could be
Bogdan
Baptiste
Tierney
Knight
Wheater
Spearing
Medo
NGog
Eagles
Lee
Beckford
The ones in bold are 6ft or over. The rest under. Now take out NGog who is not really powerful aerially and Beckford is hardly known for his heading ability, leaves you with Tierney (who looks our best header of the ball), Knight (ahem) and David "white men can't jump" Wheater.
Take one of those centre halves out and we're looking at, a very small side I suspect for this league.
