Always thought I was pretty good at it at school but then didn't play it after I'd left.

I had a go a few years ago in New York with one of the blokes who sit in Columbus park.

You're right Dujon - time away means concentration lost. Got mi ass kicked

I've not been myself but wouldn't surprise me if those guys in the parks are the equivalents of strong club players over here. You're probably on a hiding to nothing every time!

In my somewhat biassed opinion, Dan, it's the best time to learn about the game. In the process of enjoying a game it teaches you concentration, memory retention and, in particular, the ability to analyse a situation and work out tentative ploys to counter your opponent - or to press an advantage - no matter what move they might make. As you know, it's a game of ifs and buts where a mistake can cost you dearly. I can only speak for myself, but 'back in the day' a couple of extended games (win or lose) would leave me mentally drained. Perhaps I'm a masochist.

Oh, here we go. Those E-cig things have been banned from our workplace. Isn't that a little like banning that nicotine chewing gum stuff? :conf:

i used to enjoy chess - but unlike most of you on here, I was never much good at it - I don't think I have the patience for it!

anyway - am always amused when commentators say (of a game of football) - this is just like a game of chess. no it's not!

I am a big advocate of the theory that the game trains people's concentration skills and I would at least teach the basics to all kids in school at a very young age.

Perhaps at Mummy's free school.
I didn't know Mummy worked in a school.

Haha! Mr 89 shouts at me all the time for having half a conversation in my head and expecting him to understand what I mean!

But really, answer the bloody question!

A rant:

Quite simply Bruce, right from government level downwards, it's about non-smokers being in control and imposing their power on others just because they can. It always has been. Companies, restaurants, pubs etc, could all have given smokers areas to smoke in, No! ...Smoking shelters in places like hospitals are banned even though they are already outside. A big chunk of pubs have already gone out of business due to the bans and more will follow. People who like a drink and smoke get shoved outside in all weathers while the no-smokers sit in comfort and smirk. The government also know they can't totally manage without the revenue, they know people will smoke, so the no-smokers in control just laugh and just keep putting the prices up. Do they want to wreck the tobacco industry? Do they fxck as like. It brings in too much revenue.

E-cigs are a means to stopping smoking altogether (I might agree with that since I'm now on my 15th week without a cigarette and don't use th e-cig that much anyway), but no...the non-smokers have to show they can, and will, walk all over people just to prove points. I won't go back to smoking, so I have no personal axe to grind now. I do very seriously object to what's happening though. It's very, very wrong.

To be fair, Tango, I think that you have that rant ready to paste in at a moments notice, and that's fair enough. However, my question here is to do with Dizzy the Company 4uckit in HR here deciding that these Ecigs are to be banned. Are they covered by the smoking ban? I think she could be on shaky ground here - at least, we all hope she is, but then that's another story.
