Forgive my ignorance but what does 7 A* refer to? 'O' levels? 'A' Levels? Something else?Harry Genshaw wrote:My nephew getting 7 A* today.

Re: Today I'm happy about......
Can someone please explain to me the difference between an A 'Star' and Spinal Tap's '11' on the amplifier?

Re: Today I'm happy about......
So he got 7 'O's with the highest possible mark? That is brilliant. I got more 'O's but never came close to the highest mark in anything (mind you, I don't think anyone did on the Oxford Board, where 40% was a pass at 'A' level and 45% at 'O').Harry Genshaw wrote:O-levels? get with it granddad!Montreal Wanderer wrote:Forgive my ignorance but what does 7 A* refer to? Re: Today I'm happy about......
Tis a good question Bruce to which I don't know the answer but am guessing that;
A to E would represent the top 20% through to the bottom in 20% segments.
I'm guessing an A* would be the top half in that first 20% segment if that sounds credible?

the A* was introduced a long time ago to help distinguish the top crop of students when more students started getting A grades.
it's not massively complicated - unlike the 11 on the amp, there is a real difference in that you have to get an actual higher mark to achieve an A* rather than an A.

Yes, but why not make the pass mark for A a little higher, and make that the top grade? ...is what I think he means.thebish wrote:Bruce Rioja wrote:Mate, honestly. Re: Today I'm happy about......
in that case the question was badly put! A* is an actual higher mark than an A - not a number 11 volume that turns out to be the same volume as the number 10!Beefheart wrote:Yes, but why not make the pass mark for A a little higher, and make that the top grade? ...is what I think he means.thebish wrote:Bruce Rioja wrote:Mate, honestly. So, exactly like an 11 on the amplifier then.thebish wrote:Bruce Rioja wrote:Mate, honestly. I'm not kiddin'.Worthy4England wrote:Bruce Rioja wrote:Can someone please explain to me the difference between an A 'Star' and Spinal Tap's '11' on the amplifier?

only if you really believed that the amp was actually louder on 11 than it had been on 10.Bruce Rioja wrote:So, exactly like an 11 on the amplifier then.thebish wrote:Bruce Rioja wrote:Mate, honestly. Or if you believe an A star to be better than the existing top grade. It's exactly the same.thebish wrote: only if you really believed that the amp was actually louder on 11 than it had been on 10.

It used to be A. It's now A*. The top grade is the top grade.thebish wrote:the existing top grade IS A*....Bruce Rioja wrote:Or if you believe an A star to be better than the existing top grade. The maximum sound output on a guitar amplifier is 10. Making it 11 doesn't make it any louder.
