The wondering whether in Spain and Portugal they want "brick shithouse midfielders".
Half watching the Chelsea v DMB game. I'm pleased to note that Dougie had a head start on Mourinho.
We didn't start with any forwards on Saturday either. Mourinho did the same thing tonight. Interestingly Chelsea are "nil" too, anyone wonder why that might be?

We could have put Hall in for either of our front two, without compromising the defensive shape and been absolutely no worse off.BWFC_Insane wrote:Simple answer is we can't start Ream, Spearing and Medo all together without a genuine creator in Eagles or M Davies in front of them, or some real width in the side.
In the end the subs were forced on DF. Ream went off injured as did Ngog. Well Ngog signalled to the bench that he needed to come off at least. Beckford was so fed up and having zero impact.
So even had Dougie changes it immediately after they scored we could have been down to 10 men had he not taken Ream or Ngog off at that stage. And to be fair to Ream he was likely to stay on based on the performance.
DF got the initial selection wrong. I think the shape was fine but we could have incorporated a more dynamic player in the side like Hall instead of one of the more defensive three.

Absolutely agree. Would have given us an outlet and offered some width.Worthy4England wrote:We could have put Hall in for either of our front two, without compromising the defensive shape and been absolutely no worse off.BWFC_Insane wrote:Simple answer is we can't start Ream, Spearing and Medo all together without a genuine creator in Eagles or M Davies in front of them, or some real width in the side.

So we could have changed it as soon as we went one down then? Only, you're saying that we couldn't have?BWFC_Insane wrote:Absolutely agree. Would have given us an outlet and offered some width.Worthy4England wrote:

fecking bonkers line up. And fecking bonkers attempt at any kind of shape. He's going from "yeah, he's alright Dougie" to "feck me, is this Coyle's long lost twin?"

The big one for me, was every time the ball went out wide, there was a 3 second delay from our players who stood looking at eachother like "who the fvcks supposed to be over there" and then jogging across looking pissed off.
Tell you what though. Spearing's absolutely mint at telling other people to do his job. World class pointer. I like him, but he's the midfield equivalent if Paul Robinson.

I think a 5 man midfield of Ream, Spearing, Medo, Eagles and Davies would be hard to break down and creative enough for a striker like Beckford. Until Davies is fit, Moritz, Chungy and N'Gog could rotate, I'm sure. It offers very little width but I always liked it when Ancelotti played the system.

Re: (QP)R We Gonna Pick Up Our First Win Of The Season?
Having mulled things the last few days, the thing that has been bugging me is the fact Dougie thinks our defence is so shit it needs protecting by not 2, but 3 defensive midfielders. He's bought 2 of them (the back 4), given the 3rd a new contract and the other the captains arm band. I'm also worried that he's counting on getting Dawson back on loan at the last minute. If that doesn't happen then eggs and baskets etc...
I'm still sitting on the fence at the moment. If we don't get a centre back that can make up for some of the short comings we currently have then this summer is a failure for me. I don't expect promotion, but I do expect improvement.

Wouldn't the only tangible improvement on last season be promotion though? The previous guy has been gone for closing on a year, and we ended up finishing the season in 7th. Next stop is surely a minimum play off place, isn't it? How else can you measure improvement?Abdoulaye's Twin wrote: I don't expect promotion, but I do expect improvement.
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

If we're looking at tangibles then 6 or higher is improvement, though 3 through 6 don't necessarily mean promotion. For the intangibles it means (to me) being competitive in all matches, not having to play 7 defenders and Zat Knight on the wing. Improvement is being able to win a few matches by more than a goal, keeping a few clean sheets. being able to go for a proper cup run and not talk about it being at the expense of the league.Lord Kangana wrote:Wouldn't the only tangible improvement on last season be promotion though? It is very intangible, but it doesn't feel like I've been supporting Bolton Wanderers for a few seasons. An improvement would be us having our mojo back as a club, whether that means promotion or not.

Re: (QP)R We Gonna Pick Up Our First Win Of The Season?
We had a proper cup run only a couple of seasons back though. At the time it wasn't at the expense of the league. As with so many broken relationships, the ending seems to colour the judgement of its entirety.
Personally, at this moment in time, sweeping all the bullshit aside, I'd happily see us walloped 10-nowt at Tranmere if it was in a season that saw us promoted. Its the very sad reality of where we're at right now that we don't seem able to either afford to compete in the Premier League and yet simultaneously we're as equally financially screwed if we don't. I think the only way to sort the mojo of the club out is to solve that conundrum. I wouldn't know how to start.

I think the plan is for Dougie to bring players through and spend little money. That is going to take time most likely and with no guarantees. I'd rather be promoted this season, but I suspect it is going to take longer. So I'm looking for that intangible improvement for now...Lord Kangana wrote:We had a proper cup run only a couple of seasons back though. At the time it wasn't at the expense of the league. I'd prefer tangible, but it isn't looking likely now is it

Two new strikers please (that's folk that put a ball into a net, rather than "forwards" that can just fanny about)
