Yon library's just been on the 6 O'Clock News, William. Definitely requires a coat of looking at.
May the bridges I burn light your way

Was planning to watch Rush this week, then realised that it doesn't open until the 13th. May try to drag Mrs BP along to the General's recco instead.

Rush is having an advanced screening at cineworlds everywhere tomorrow night but yeah, general release next week - looks epic!
You'll not go far wrong with The Way Way Back tho, delightful.

Re: What are you watching tonight?
I watched the Chilean film ‘No’ the other day, it had been on my radar for a while since it was recognised at the Oscars but I inked it on the list when Kermode put it in his “Top 5 films of the year so far” thing he does*. However, when I read it is the final instalment of director Pablo Larrain’s ‘Pinochet’ trilogy, following on from ‘Tony Manero’ and ‘Post Mortem’ - I naturally decided to seek out the previous two films before watching ‘No’. So ive seen those too but waited to complete the hat-trick before commenting. As a series they are brilliant, as individual films each have their own merits. The stories are not connected other than the plots and characters are somehow effected by the oppression imposed by the Pinochet regime in 1970/80’s Chile. They are very low key, low budget but cold, unsettling and bleak but compelling films.
‘Tony Manero’ is about this guy who obsesses about John Travolta's character in Saturday night fever, and the depths of despair he will stretch to in this lawless society just to cobble together a poxy glass dancefloor like the one in SNF, its pretty brutal. The 2nd, ‘Post Mortem’ is about an employee of a Morgue in Santiago, who is in love with a communist neighbour until her house is raided by the military and she goes missing. He then begins a frantic search for her while having to endure pressure from the military who want to hide the real cause of death of the bodies piling up in the morgue.
Then theres ‘No’ definitely the best of the bunch, which is all about Pinochet’s 1988 Yes/No plebiscite (which was interesting because i knew nothing about it before) and this young hotshot advertising executive who is drafted in to apply his Don Draper skills in producing the No campaign – The No campaign proves quite popular, thus exposing him (see the pattern here?) to threats and violence from shady officials and the military! All good stuff, but if its laughs or special effects you’re after - swerve em.
*Ive seen all his Top 5 so far now and its pretty uninspired imo.
1 Good Vibrations – tbf is great
2 No – decent
3 The Act of Killing – zzzzzzzzzzzzzz
4 Beyond the Hills – zzzzzzzzzzzzzz
5 Love is all you need - meh

Watched a bizarre, low-budget film that I'd recorded on Film 4 called "Primer". Although a very good concept, it was bizarre to watch. Can't decide if it was good or just Meh?

Re: What are you watching tonight?
I enjoyed 'No' very much. Thought it raised genuine moral/political dilemmas. And was honest. And told a good story. And ended with the defeat of that total bastard Pinochet. So a happy ending...General Mannerheim wrote:I watched the Chilean film ‘No’ the other day, it had been on my radar for a while since it was recognised at the Oscars but I inked it on the list when Kermode put it in his “Top 5 films of the year so far” thing he does*. Didn't know it was part of a trilogy - thanks for that - i'll look them up despite your lukewarm response. They sound interesting.

I quite liked "Deja vu" but this was just mental and I lost track of what was going on in some parts.a1 wrote:dunno, reminded me of that deja vu denzel washington film, but "upstream color" sounds miles madderwigan white wrote:Watched a bizarre, low-budget film that I'd recorded on Film 4 called "Primer". Re: What are you watching tonight?
its the same kinda plot , Denzy Dub keeps going back on his self a number of times to stop that boat being bombed, but yeah , this is kinda like a super complicated back to the future triology , so much so this old wiki page *spoilers beware* explains all the plot , then adds an slightly alternate plot line explanation that would also fit what you see. plotholes , erm, its supposed to do that.

Oh Dear!... here's one to give a miss, tonight, ITV, "Pat and Cabbage"
I might have to force myself to watch it just to give y'all a review.
