Most things worth inventing are British? Good god.
And the British invented "every sport currently played around the world".

Silly boy should have kept his mouth shut or mentioned the fact we are world leaders in democracy (or is he still smarting over getting his ass whupped!).
Anyway due to 'Dave' and his mates cutting our armed forces like they have, Putin has a very valid point. Trident is the only thing that keeps us at the big boys table and TBH I actually wonder whose finger is on our nuke option, Uncle Sams?

It sounds like he's written this off the back of one too many sherries. Or more likely, one of his staff.

Re: The Politics Thread
Perhaps a little over the top. One strongly suspects Ultimate Frisbee, for example, to be of American origin, while basket ball was invented by a Canadian (alas, in America) - the fruit basket was later changed to a net so they didn't have to climb up and get the ball after each score. Polo comes from Asia, although the British may have added the refinement of a ball instead of someone's head. Oh well, politicians are allowed hyperbole.BWFC_Insane wrote:mrkint wrote:Putin has a go at Britain saying it isn't important, Cameron takes to social media and goes a bit partridge about it

In 1992 at the World Series (also known as the Fall Classic because it is held in the Fall when the leaves fall from the trees) the Toronto Blue Jays became the first Canadian team to make the final. The US marines had to march with the Canadian flag in the opening ceremony.Lost Leopard Spot wrote:The flag IS upside down too.mrkint wrote: Reminds me of this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T72TopWbXJg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
They managed to get it upside down and it was a lot more obvious than the Union Jack. The commentator said it gave a whole new meaning to the term Fall Classic.

Seriously?! Again?!
The Union Flag is the same upside-down as it is the right way up. It is different when back to front.

I don't think you are correct here, Pru. See for example http://resources.woodlands-junior.kent. ... jack7.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;Prufrock wrote:Seriously?! Again?!

Furthermore wiki tells me:
Of course rotating it 180 degrees horizontally or vertically may come to the same thing. It is often stated that a flag upside down is a form of distress signal or even a deliberate insult. In the case of the Union Jack, the difference is subtle and is easily missed by the uninformed. It is often displayed upside down inadvertently—even on commercially-made hand waving flags.[13]
On 3 February 2009, the BBC reported that the flag had been inadvertently flown upside-down by the UK government at the signing of a trade agreement with Chinese premier when Jiabao. The error had been spotted by readers of the BBC news website who had contacted the BBC after seeing a photograph of the event.

Pru's right. And that website is a of old bollocks.

That flag is identical when upside down.

That flag is identical when upside down.

surely pru's right whatever wiki tells you! draw it on a piece of paper, turn the paper upside down, see that pru is right - then give your head a shake!!

Too simplistic, CH.CrazyHorse wrote:Pru's right. And that website is a of old bollocks.

If you take the "correct way" and turn it upside down keeping the staff on the left hand side, it will be wrong. That is, you are rotating through a different axis but still turning it upside down.

Re: The Politics Thread
I think all this proves is that there are two way to turn it upside down - one rotating 180 degrees left to right (the Pru way)and the second rotating it 180 degrees fore and aft. In both cases the bottom edge goes to the top. However, the staff should be on the left so I still maintain the Pru way is flawed.thebish wrote:Montreal Wanderer wrote:I don't think you are correct here, Pru. Re: The Politics Thread
It's different when flipped like a table football player, but that makes it upside-down AND back to front, and it's the back to frontness that makes it 'wrong'!

Imagine facing a man. Now, if his head is at 12 and his feet at 6, turn him 180 degress clockwise. His feet are now at 12 and he is facing you. He is upside down. Do thaty with the Union and it is the same.
Now imagine facing another man who starts upright and facing you. Put a stick through him going in one side under one arm, and coming out the other. Now spin him 180 on this axis. His feet are in the air, and he is facing away from you. He is upside down AND back to front. Do this to the Union and it is different, but because it is back to front.
