there are only two series out on DVD so far - wouldn't take you that long to catch up...

"lots of boobage" is what the General really means above!
We've seen three seasons over here so far and I did get interested. As a result I have read the first five books (4700 pages!) and am far ahead of the HBO series (season 3 ended in the middle of book 3).

I love the TV series and I'm enjoying it as just that, but I think I will inevitably have to read the books as the risk of spoilers to the TV series when the books are complete will be too great.

Just reading that they've moved Cregan to a secure hospital
Asked about the move to the Merseyside hospital, Greater Manchester Police chief constable Sir Peter Fahy said he "couldn't give a toss about Mr Cregan".

This all sounds a bit... wanky, for me. I can't be doing with Lord of the Rings and all that, so would this fall into the same bracket?

I can't stand the Lord of the Rings stuff. GoT has that if you look for it, but it's more Dan Brown quick paced thriller. It's badly written, but absorbing. I don't think you'd like it, but I didn't think I would either so...

I've read LoTR many times and (obviously) like it. I liked GoT though found the last two books repetitive and a trifle tedious. LoTR is much better written. As a story it had good guys and bad guys - the good guys won after facing incredible odds. GoT kills off quite a few good guys and good does not always triumph. Of course there is a lot more sex and the tv series does not shy away from nudity. If you do not like LoTR (the books) you probably will not like GoT (the books - which are actually called Song of Ice and Fire - GoT just being the first book). The tv series is as good as much else on US tv - I got hooked thanks to my kids.

Ah, OK ta. So 'they' have done away with the market element ... a pity as it was pretty sorted after the big refurbishment about 15 years ago.

Nothing compared with the horrors of Regent Street though where the charity shops and £ shops compete with the empty units to give an air of Merthyr Tydfil .... which is itself an improvement on the Beruit Chic of Bradshawgate from Trinity Street to Great Moor Street.

Actually, having thought about it, I don't think there is much LotR stuff in there, by which I mean when I say I hate LotR stuff I mean wank about orcs and elves and shit. There's a little, but hardly any of that, only slightly more (he says having only seen the first series) than in the TV show.

All the Dan Brown comparison meant is short hand for 'plot based with lots of twists'. It's better written than Dan Brown, but still has dodgy moments. I don't think it really bears comparison to anything he's likely to have read. My advice would be: watch a couple of the tv episodes, and if you like it, stop, and read the books. If you like the TV, you'll like the books. Also, I think (as it has to) the TV show simplifies and 'gives' you some of the stuff that is left as a 'mystery' in the books. It's the sort of thing where there is satisfaction in working stuff out.

Fair enough, you probably aren't missing much unless you really, really, love the TV programme.

I like your thing on the previous page about dying surrounded by books you meant to read. Part of me always thinks that I'm swapping a 'worthy' book every time I read something like GoT or Girl with the Dragon Tattoo!
