It sort of makes sense to be honest. I ran a training course in the Netherlands last year for around 20 Risk Engineers. There were people from Switzerland, Germany, France, Russia, Turkey and somewhere in the middle east. They all commented that they could understand one of the other presenters better who was speaking heavily accented English than me (speaking the Queens English) and two people from Manchester.Prufrock wrote:Ha! Firstly, that might work if Dads were doing it on purpose!malcd1 wrote:It sort of makes sense to be honest. I ran a training course in the Netherlands last year for around 20 Risk Engineers. Secondly, I think there's something in your point, but it's not as simple as 'accented' English. When I lived in France, one of my friends was a French guy who'd done the same thing in England the year before. We talked about this, and he said he found it easier to understand English when people put on a comedy mock French accent. It makes sense I suppose, in that most of the 'live' English he'd ever heard was spoken, in class, by somebody French. It doesn't work generally though. He had no idea if I spoke with a comedy German accent though, for example.
My dad, to my knowledge, doesn't have a comedy Greek accent in his repertoire!

This happened last week and I must have watched it back seven or eight times since, knowing the result and it's still incredible. Basically an unbelievable individual effort and one the best bits of sporting drama and physical effort I've seen recently. It pretty much sums up why I love sport.
To set the scene it's from a stage of this year's Vuelta Espana. Tony Martin (super-awesome cyclist, not the Norfolk farmer) went on the attack inside the first kilometre of a 170km stage, and stayed out in front on his own from there. The video is the last 2km and him fighting to stay infront on his own against the raging 180 strong peleton behind.
