Re: Bands you don't "get".
I'd seriously like to challenge this statement... there is at least one band that were American, punk, and even better than Talking Heads: Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers.Il Pirate wrote:Some of your sentiment I agree with Pru. The pistols were put together by Maclaren. However, the band existed prior to John Lydon joining them. Also Sid was another 'fashion addition' by Maclaren, 18 months after the original Pistols formed. He couldn't play, and the guy who was sacked (Matlock), played bass on most of the recordings. But to state that Steve Jones or Glen Matlock couldn't play guitar or bass; or Paul Cooke could not play the drums is realy taking the piss. The Ramones? Two great songs. ( Listen to Suzi is a headbanger. Same as Sheena is a punk rocker? You bet. But these are not the two best Ramones songs). But they still made three great songs less than the Pistols. American punk? Who's great ? Only Talking Heads, who subsequently went onto be one of the greatest dance/new wave acts ever. American punk was as bigger myth as gold at the end of the rainbow. Don't believe all you read.

They are American, they were punk. Some of the greatest tracks I've heard are on their one and only album. I adore Roadrunner, Astral Plane and She Cracked. Pablo Picasso is divine.

Not, best intro everIl Pirate wrote:Prufrock wrote:Sex Pistols? Boyband full of pansies. Never mind they were bollocks.
The band that changed the face of Britain. Not only musicaly but socialy. The Pistols taught a generation, a generation I was part of; to say feck you! We are not going to be pushed around, we are not subserviant, we are not yours to shape and twist to serve. We are free people and this is what we want. ( Then I joined an organisation that realy shaped and twisted me) Is there a better intro than pretty vacant? No. Apart from all that, Glen Matlock had a place on the Island and his kids went to Ryde school with some of my kids. A realy nice chap. (Who I used to see in Marks and Sparks cafe a lot).

The Pirate and Bruce have is spot on (although i disagree about the Ramones, I like them) as far as I remember the punk scene started in the US in the mid 70's but was dying on its arse until the Brits and esp the Pistols jump started it, ok a lot of hype and bullshit was used but to a spotty teen it was funny bullshit and struck a nerve. I had my photo taken by a old American lady outside the National Art gallery once, she liked my black spikey hair and tartan trousers

Re: Bands you don't "get".
Anyway, given that this is bands you don't get, did I mention, I don't get the Sex Pistols?
Bobo might have mentioned too.
They gave a fairly small number of 14 year olds somthing to snigger at by putting the word "Bollocks" on an Album. Most of the universe just passed them by.

Raven has taste, fully understands the zietgiest of the 70's which brought zest to a disaffected youth of Britain. I would try and point this out to Worthy, but he's probably too busy listening to Liverpool Express.................

That erstwhile punks should use the word "Zeitgeist" about ends the discussion Bluebeard.
I'm sure it was great fun at the time, just don't view it as a social revolution.
Now, here's a thing ... I have about 9, 000 albums in various forms and not a single one of Elvis' !!
... & while I'm on about that I cannot get into .... & I really have tried ..
Elvis Costello.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Worthy comes on here slagging bands off and counters with fecking Genesis. Now that's a little like slating people's haircuts whilst sporting a 'Stringfellow'.

Don't think I've slagged the Sex Pistols off particularly, I just mentioned that I don't get 'em. I'm fairly short of 45-50 year olds that I know that are still anarchaic or ever even were, but they were mightly impressed with the word "bollocks" on an album cover when they were about 12 and that should change the course of history, honest guv, that'll put it right up the establishment. Oh, and I've refuted some overblown claims that "an entire generation" was influenced by them.Bruce Rioja wrote:Worthy comes on here slagging bands off and counters with fecking Genesis. I'm sure that's all unlike slagging other bands off whilst sporting a mohican....

Ah, they're reducing in age, I see. Has anyone actually claimed that Sex Pistols influenced their entire life? Oh, and by the way, if you really do want to meet anarchic 45-50 year olds then stick your head through the door at The Alma, though I doubt that their life paths were formed by them, or if they ever even listened to them much.Worthy4England wrote:Don't think I've slagged the Sex Pistols off particularly, I just mentioned that I don't get 'em. Have to say re: Elvis Costello, never used to like him, but he's really grown on me in the last couple of years. I like to think its because I've grown up a little myself.
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

I did reduce the age, somewhat, buy dint of the fact that I did some maths, and figured if I was 13 when "bollocks" was released, you musta been younger than that.Bruce Rioja wrote:Ah, they're reducing in age, I see. Mr Pirate didn't actually say that the Pistols influenced anyone's entire life, I just pointed out that given...
...there wasn't many left that I knew (I don't know many long haired rockers wearing patchouli oil either, maybe they're all avoiding me.Our Pirate Friend wrote:The band that changed the face of Britain. As for The Alma, I suspect I could go in a whole host of Holt's pubs too, to get a similar view of anarchy, some of 'em listen to Barry Manilow on the jukebox.
