I worked there for three years. The town has some deep seated issues of multiple deprivation, but get out of the centre and it also has some beautiful countryside.

I went to an awards night for work in Burnley, they had a comedian on. Guy on my right turned to the bloke next to him and said "He's alright this comedian int ee" to which he got the deadpan reply "Aye, if you like laughin".

Sort of summed up the town for me.
Where would you put it on your list of sh*tholes England has to offer. For me it is 4th, just in front of Middlesbrough, with Nelson 3rd, Colne2nd and of course the mighty Redcar 1st. Do you feel well off in Burnley being a Bolton lad.
Christ Dan, are rough towns your hobby/obsession? And Colne the 2nd roughest? Ive been plenty of times as my mums side of the family lives there and it never struck me as being rough.
No its just is p*sses me off that people around my way are cushioned in wool from the real world by mummy and daddy and don't know what the real world is like to the point where they call and town north of Oxford a sh*Th**e because they are uneducated. One of the many reasons why I am really looking forward to getting back to Horwich so that I can avoid the morons of Wokingham and their suburban nightmares (and yes there are people around here who will worry for weeks about what their child is going to wear for such and such an occasion because they don't have any real worries)

Ignore him. He has both Slough and Bracknell on his doorstep. I think it's just a desperate attempt to curry some form of popularity. It's a shame really and one shouldn't mock, difficult though it often is.
Please explain further Bruce, you really have had it in for me the last couple of weeks haven't you.

I don't need to follow your links, Dan. I've been to each of those towns a great many times.

Ok that doesn't answer my question but good for you going about England and seeing places. I have made my opinions on going to these places much the same as you have and have come to my conclusions that you disagree with, fair enough it would be a boring world if everybody agreed with each other on everything.

Almost drew with someone rated about 2000 FIDE last night (chess). It was a blitz game, and you know, bragging about almost drawing is a bit meh, but still, i was expecting to get destroyed in the first few moves.

Haven't been since I used to play for university but as a junior I used to play for Atherton (every opponent I ever had thought that was amusing, sigh) and later on Culcheth.

Clubs are great for the curious mix of people like you get in no other sport. Juniors to pensioners, all of which you'll have no idea of their strength on the first night.

Also they're invariably hosted in pubs!

had a bit of a "meh" couple of weeks - STUFF!

anyway - went to see old Len in hospital today - I'm one of the very few people who visit him - what family he has left appear to have basically forgotten about him - though he always talks about them... he was 90 last week - and was in hospital for it suffering 1000 indignities and not a little pain and discomfort..

yet..

coming away from seeing him I ALWAYS feel lifted and have to give my head a shake about the disappointments in life that so easily get me down...

there are precious few folk like that - where i come away from visiting feeling lifted rather than drained - but Len's one of them - and I am grateful to him....

he told me today that he is just becoming a burden to the world... I told him (truthfully) what the nurse had said to me when I asked her where Len was today - she said "Oh - Lovely old Len? we've moved him into that side-ward".. his eyes filed with tears...

Just had some tremendous news that I'm not allowed to share with anyone. From a daughter. And they, women in general, that is, don't like sharing such news until its absolutely certain, say about 12 weeks certain. But, no, I'm not allowed to share so you'll all have to wait.

Yep, congrats to her .... but don't let her tell Social Services that you think 'Count Arthur Strong' is funny.

Just don't.

You've been warned.

Great news, Clappers. :oyea: I have four kids - three in their thirties - and no hint of a grandkid yet. I'm very jealous.
