I just texted my Mrs and said I was disappointed. It should have been "magnificent" :)

(cos it made me smile)

came across a mother today who is ranting because her kid hasn't got a part in the school nativity play... she sends him to a CofE school and when he started she officially withdrew him from all school religious assemblies because she objected to the religious aspect of the school...

My wife has told me of a few incidents recently. A couple relate to school journeys.

One parent has complained to the school that their child is not having enough fun at school whilst their classmates are on school journey. The parent (recently split from her partner) assumed the father had paid. The deadline passed and the child couldn't go. Anyway the parent expects the school to provide fun activities for her child instead of the curriculum lessons. When the school refused she withdrew the child and took it on holiday herself.

Another parent, aware that schools cannot insist on charging for certain school trips but instead ask for a contribution, drummed up sufficient support amongst the parents against paying any contributions that the school couldn't afford to fund it. So it was cancelled. Some people just can't help being feck*.

Now back working in a private school I am more exposed to nightmare mothers again. Its when they hammer on the PE department office door before barging in and start off by saying 'Now i'm not a pushy parent but...' Sigh.

Had to take a squad of 11 to my U10A 7 a side hockey game today purely because some parents would kick off if their precious darlings weren't in the A team... So had to play them all. Ended up drawing a game we really could and should have won had we just taken our best 8. I'm all for giving every kid a chance and all kids will play in matches every term at some point, but it REALLY annoys me that my team selection is dictated by parents.

If they've not given the kid a place out of spite that's pretty pathetic imo. If there weren't any roles left, fair enough.

you can hardly give the kid a role in the nativity play if his parents have specifically withdrawn him from the religious activities of the school!

You said withdrawn from all religious assemblies. Our 'nativity' plays at school were only 'religious' every other year.

And, IMO, it's perfectly reasonable to not want the state teaching your kid school fairy stories as fact, but want to let him or her pretend to be a fairy with his friends. They're not the same thing.

And to pre-empt the 'why send your kid to a fairy school' question. Well, when they have the best facilities, more money, and as a result better results, what are you going to do?

Religion should be kept out of schools IMO.

It's an interesting argument anyway, but when it's taken to the level of not letting the kid be in the play with his mates to make a point it's a bit pathetic.

"Sorry Johnny, you can't be in the play, I know you're heartbroken, but seriously, you're mum looks like a right dick atm, it's hilarious. Jesus is all about this shit"
