Damn 'The works' website. About 5 times I have tried filling my basket with books for the twins birthday party bags and every time I try and check out it empties it.

that's because the idea of you giving everyone else's kids gifts when it is your kids birthday - as well as paying for a party and all the nosh they will eat is a dumb one! the site is saving you from yourself...

party bags - pah!! stoopid american idea. the very most you should give them is a piece of cake wrapped in kitchen roll that they later chuck away cos it has bits of soggy kitchen roll stuck to it!!

This is Sussex Bish. There's a lot of peer pressure (as opposed to pier pressure ... arff, arff).
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

stop it then - do summat much simpler - kids birthday parties should not be the source of stress and anger - they should be a time of joy and celebration! really - the piddly toddlers coming will have no idea whether you have given them party bags or not - and will not think less of you or your kids for not joining the mums-race!

(actually - i am fairly serious - really - it just takes one to break the mould and show all the other yummie-mummies what a stupid rat-race these competitive parties can be!)

Its not exactly fancy stuff. Church hall packed with toys, maybe a craft activity and some icing biscuits. Not sure I will even bother with party games this year. I do need to make a couple of Birthday cakes, cos I enjoy doing that and I know how special it was that my mum took the time to do it for me, other then that will do some nice tea time bits and a small party bag with a cheapo book, a bit of cake, sweets and a balloon in. Have just got a lot on my plate at the moment so seems more work/stress then it probably will be.

that's the crappy websites fault! If they weren't selling Postman Pat, Fireman Sam and Thomas books at about 90p a pop I'd have given up lonnnggg ago in favour of X factor.

Just get some of those fun size (they aren't fun, but stick with me) sweets and some paper for pass the parcel. Musical chairs, musical statues and pin the donkey etc. Wear the little buggers out and the parents will thank you. No need for owt else.

Be thankful you're not here. 2 options here. You either outsource the event to some company for 30-40 quid per kid and they make a pizza and play the games listed above. Or, you hire clowns with a mini zoo and the caterers in and get them to host a party in your home for you. This is a favourite option as the mummies get to drink champers and ignore their kids for a couple of hours! Not much change from a grand I reckon

I've no kids, but I did get a bit angry on my brother-in-laws behalf seeing what his missus spent on my nieces party. He's Scottish, so should have had no trouble with the our culture bit

Since I have gone part time I don't get so much loot at the end of term - and barely any when swim teaching. Be interesting to see what new posh school is like that way! 8)

I lived with a girl who worked at a 13k per year private primary (!!) school in West London. She got 500 quids worth of Christmas prezzies 'from' the kids. It's coming!

Presents for the teacher from parents! How strange. Sure all teachers would pocket any tips which came their way, but it must feel a lot better if the child themselves has made something out the blue?
