Liverpool laughing stocks?

There ARE other teams(we'd have no-one to play otherwise) and here's where all-comers can discuss the wider world of football......

managerial greatness is pretty subjective - lists of trophies/honours hardly tell the full story... but Kenny's managerial cupboard contains, as far as i can tell:

4 first div/premiership champions trophies (3 with liverpool and one with blackburn)
2 FA cups and 1 league cup
1 scottish league cup

it's not bad - but nowt in europe - and there would be several needing bigger cupboards for their trophies than he'd need...
And as soon as the going got a little rough his arse went - at Liverpool, Blackburn and Newcastle.

I'd have quite a few managers in my list of good ones that had hardly stellar careers. As I mentioned earlier, Wenger would be one - his career is not exactly stellar either. Brian Clough didn't exactly stuff a Mourinho sized cabinet full of silverware either.

Dalglish 4 first division titles, 2 FA Cups, 1 League Cup
Wenger 4 1st division titles 6 FA Cups (or equivalent)

Leaving aside the minor honours Wenger and Clough are equally, if not more successful than Dalglish. And of Dalglish's honours only ONE was in the last twenty years.

I'd say that Clough's by far the more successful given what he inherited. Like I said earlier, as soon as Dalglish didn't get everything handed to him on a plate his arse fell out every time.

aye... thing is, though - you didn't just say Kenny was "good" - you said he was one of the "TWO giants of the last 20 years"

that kind of hyperbole is gonna raise an eyebrow or two! certainly raised mine! (it raised both of them because, frustratingly, I am unable to raise just one eyebrow - as I SO wish I could...)

also - clough had success at home and abroad (europe) - kenny didn't...

No, no, no. This is very frustrating. I wasn't trying to say he was one of two giants, full stop... I was trying to say that about twenty years ago about the time of Hillsboro that he was one of the two giants of football. I haven't got him pinned up above me bed, I was receding back in history to the time when Man U started to knock Liverpool 'off their bleeding perch' I believe is the relevant phrase.

And leaving aside the rabid anti-Liverpool feeling, the careers of Dalgliesh, Wenger and Clough as outlined up there^ don't seem too far apart in terms of achievement to me.

Yes. Correct, the miserable dour Glaswegian fecker failed miserably to do anything in Europe. Agreed. But I don't hold that the good managers have to perform in Europe, as somebody said it's all pretty subjective.
There are a lot of Gkaswegians in my (subjective) list though - so maybe I'm biased in favour of dour wasp chewing Scots.

The spotty one wrote (before he started backtracking): The 'giants' of the last twenty years were Fergie and Dalglish...

Now you're saying he's comparable to Clough and Wenger who have had 'hardly stellar' careers.

If you backtrack any more you're going to hit your head on your mum's Uterus. 8)

I'm no apologist for Dalglish, but weren't we banned from Europe during his tenure at Liverpool?

I was just about to put this.

If so it is hardly fair judging him on competitions that arguably his best team weren't allowed to compete in.

In any case they are still scouse tw@ts.

That was after Heysell (no idea how to spell that) wasn't it? Wasn't that before he was manager???

English clubs were banned for quite a while, the season we came back didn't manure win the cup winners?

What a feckin topic this is talking about the merits of manure and scouseland.

Ah, seems that Dalglish's time in charge of Liverpool and the European ban ran contemporaneously, so he bottled it when they were allowed back in, the shithouse. :)

I have tried to explain that. I believe I'm amending an impression I wrongly gave. Let me help you to understand where I'm not backtracking: I think, still despite the vehemence displayed towards him, that Dalglish was a great manager. I believe, at the time Fergie was making a name for himself that he was one of the two giants in English football at that time. I think that FSGs appointment of him as a director is 'canny'. I understand that these views are contntious - that has been made very clear. I'm not trying to wind anybody up, but my mother's uterus is safe from me bumping my head against it, ta.
