Tell me you didn't drink red wine as a student?

We used to go 1/3rds on a bottle of Morinov and a 24 pack of Morrison's own lager. I think it worked out at about £7.50 each. Then we didn't have to buy much when we were out.

Proper student drinking that.

Cyprus cream sherry from a big plastic barrel at the corner shop. 'Decanted' into a pop bottle you took yourself . Now THAT, my friend, was proper student drinking.

I missed days from my life with that !!

I forgot that stuff. Brilliant!
Norseman lager from Tesco was a favourite of mine. Just about feeling tipsy by the end of the crate.

I remember the concept (though I was only a kid at the time) because the tv ad ran - show me the way to Armadillo, or something similar (set to the obvious tune)

Anyway - just picked up a half a dozen bottles of Tagus Creek 2011 Shiraz & Trincadeira (what?) at Tesco. You know my take on Portuguese reds? Well, they had six bottles so I bought them all. What a fecking result. Unshakable opinion on Portuguese reds entrenched further still. :oyea:

No, well, of sorts. Technically, some of it it was red wine. The sort that is called 'Spanish Red Wine' and has a helpful map on the back of where it originates. That'll be somewhere in, well, Spain. I reckon it was drip-tray leavings. We used to buy the cheapest bottle of wine, whatever the colour/flavour, from the offy on Kentish Town Road and drink that on the walk to the Union. If it was our lucky night we'd have chanced it on FTSE 100 night (sounds shit, but was amazing, basically, the more popular the drink, the more it expensive it became, and vice-versa) and find ourselves drinking shots of Archers schnapps and Creme de Menthe at 20p a do. I'd be surprised if those nights cost me a tenner, and that was a good 10 (20? 30?) years after you old f*ckers went 8).

Dropped Naked Wine a mail to see if they'll be doing any Christmas deals? Got a really nice mail back saying they'll be doing buy-a-case & get a case FOC deals along with a free magnum. So I'm hanging on to my £80 for now :)

Bruce - and others near a Morrisons - the 2011 Campo Viejo Rioja is reduced at Morrisons to £5.59 - about £3 cheaper than normal. They also have a general wine offer of buy six bottles 25% off - which would take the Rioja down to less than £4. 50. BAR_GAIN.

I'm going shopping in the morning. :D

Asda have knocked down Faustino 1 2000 to £13 - I'm guessing in anticipation of restocking with 2001. Might not seem bargainous, but it'll probably be £18 or north when the new vintage comes out.

I quite like it, although you must always decant Faustino, especially when young, its just the way it is - but Rioja needs to be left for years normally anyway. After that its either shite or amazing. Everyone is banging on about 2001 in Spain as if its some epiphany moment. I say everyone, I generally mean Americans. In the main its a very robust vintage, very "American" in that respect. I still prefer 2000. I think its more traditional. And because its been trampled down in the stampede to get to 2001's, usually at a good price.

No panic Bruce, 2012 was a terrible harvest across Europe, with yields down by huge percentages. Its a bit of a Daily Mail headline - 2009/10/11 were bumper years (11 more selectively). And theres always a lag when buying wine - you'll very rarely be drinking 2013 vintage this year. So just stock up a bit now, let 2012 and the hype blow over, and buy again when the next incredible vintage is declared (probably, based on cyclical/cynical predictions, in 2014 or 2015).

I've been putting together some wines for my mum and dad's joint 65th next year - about ten bottles I was thinking, maybe setting it up as a bit of a tasting competition or something for a bit of fun. They're all wines that I've owned for a while, so I would expect some of them to have appreciated in price a bit, not least because they will now becoming rare.

What I hadn't expected was one of them now to have a market value (minimum price) of £386.00. That'll be three hundred and eighty six of your English pounds. Not only that, but the average value of the wines is £86.00 a bottle. Bloody hell, I needed a sit down after that one. I might add I paid nowhere near that amount for any of them. Perhaps Bruce's fears for the rising costs of wine are well founded?

I think I might just keep them and buy some three for a tenner from Asda. What they don't know can't harm them.
