Far from being offended on the lad's behalf Bruce, I'm just a tad shocked you saw fit to use the term at all, or show someone such little personal respect. I know your motives weren't discriminatory, but that's the connotation now given to that term.

There's a fine line Bobo between what is acceptable and what is not. I agree that there seems to be much difference in the threshold of what is considered acceptable in the private sector compared to the public sector. Which side has the balance right is I suppose, up for debate.

2 years ago, coming out of the paediatric entrance to the hospital, a porter's van slowed down and the bloke inside shouted "Oi. you fecking queer". Slightly taken aback (I consider myself something something of a metrosexual- I moisturise daily, does that count?), I turned round to see one of his colleagues behind me. Inappropriate as it was, I didn't take offence. Until 4 seconds later when I turned back to face him and he snarled at me "What's your problem, you some sort of queer cnut"?

He seemed to be anticipating a fight as I walked towards him unbuttoning my coat, but it was only so that he could see my ID badge. He turned a lovely shade of white, then green.

I know for a fact the one about England is wrong and I would also point out that Wolverhampton leads the stakes in Yams for those of you that know black country slang.

Firstly, I'd like to make an unqualified apology to Bruce for having a pop about the Gunga Din thing. Not because I think he was right, but more because on the train back from Piccadilly today, a young Asian bloke got on the packed train and stood at the side of me. He was carrying a large rucksack, which he placed at his feet and then proceeded to pray repeatedly over and over. The same prayer getting more intense as he went. He started to sweat a little, then considerably as time went by.

My point is that by Oxford Street station, I was starting to get a tad worried, as were the other people around me. I'm still internally debating whether this makes me a tad racist as it was a fairly irrational response, albeit perhaps understandable on some level :conf: The poor bloke was only meeting the demands of his faith, yet there was a tangible relaxing of the passengers as he got off the train.

I'm not going to beat myself up about it, but there again, I recognise my own hypocracy. Is there a penitent smiley?!

If you were worried that the rucksack was an explosive device, I don't think your reaction was necessarily unreasonable given recent events. I don't see the cases at all similar tbh.

As far as I'm concerned, Bob's a brave man. I'd have been off the train before the first prayer died away. I'd rather be a late Monty than the late Monty.

Who knows if it wasn't a dry-run ??

I'd change your route for a while Bobby.

God they really do think they are the most important organisation or brand as they call themselves on earth. Who gives a f**k what they think, maybe we should see what Bolton fans or Leicester fans think of etc etc as well.

It did make me giggle a bit though I must admit.
