Didn't you like my late-night whiskey-infused stream-of-consciousness response GtE?Gary the Enfield wrote:LeverEnd wrote:Yeah standard GP response is rest and anti-inflammatory meds. My physio did deep friction on the calf I tore in may and had me strengthening it through various graded calf raise exercises that work both soleus and gastrocnemius muscles, you'll fins plenty on the internet. i also used a foam roller to massge them myself using my own bodyweight. Did it most days and it helped. I would heat it with a hot water bottle first to loosen it up (after the initial injury phase had eased off). Hope that helps. Sounds like you've been able to still do stuff so it might not be acute, or you are just a hard-as-nails mofo who feels no pain!
In essence.

Re: The athletics/running thread
Hmmmm
Something's wrong.
The last two races (Half marathon two weeks ago and a 5k last night) I've completely run out of energy towards the end.
Last night I did my first mile at 6:50, second at 7:15 and the third in 7:30. Finish time was 22.42
It's a hilly course but I did the same race last month in 21:57 so somewhere I've lost 45 seconds over 5k. Doesn't sound a lot, but it is to me.
Suggestions?

creeping old age - Not in the last month but possibly
short term undiagnosed medical condition - Panders to my ego
chronic undiagnosed medical condition -Panders to my paranoia
statistical fluctuation - wha?
autumn/winter underfoot conditions - Same course on made ground. Was a little windier than normal but I specifically and drastically fatigued in the last half mile
extra weight due to hair growth - Well, it IS Movember
less aerodynamic clothing - Same outfit (washed)
extra weight due to porking out
or... an unexplained 45sec time loss??
alien abduction...

So, on that basis the most likely scenario is I'm dying. Or I should just cut out the chocolate.

Some of our athletes take those energy gel shots during a race, I don't know much about them but could be an option to look into?

I have taken energy gels on longer runs. Shouldn't need one on a 5k run. And enough with the technophobe jibes!

To be honest, I'd just give up if i were you and take up carpet bowls or something.
Glad to be of help. Will send you the bill later

Re: The athletics/running thread
Were you happy with your mileage and tempo runs for the half?
If you weren't optimally trained for the half then you could have faded for that reason and also have lingering tiredness in your legs that stops you running well over 5k. Just one possible theory.
I'd rest a few days then plug away and see if you perk up and if not then look for other explanations.
Just off to try 2 laps of the 5k course after my massive 7.5 min run the other day and an encouraging physio prognosis.

No. I was 8 minutes off my normal time. But I think I've identified the problem.
I've just been back through my diary. Since I got back from Holiday at the end of August I have competed in the following races:
08/09 Clacton Triathlon (Olympic Distance)
15/09 Mayor of Enfield's 10k run
21/09 Dorney Lakes triathlon relay
29/09 Garden City 10 mile run
01/10 Chingford League 5k interclub race
05/10 Leverhulme Parkrun 5k
08/10 Lea Valley Aquathlon
12/10 Chingford League 5 mile x-country interclub race
20/10 Birmingham Half Marathon
27/10 10 mile Sunday Run (helping a mate get up to speed)
05/11 Chingford League 5k interclub race
In addition to this I have run in training a minimum of twice a week and swum twice a week too (apart from the days where a race has clashed with or just before a training day)
I have a half marathon on the 17th November and a club race on the 24th. December I rest.

Re: The athletics/running thread
Was marshalling the Red Rose XC at Leverhulme Park today before the match. Bucketing down and hailstone and an absolute mudbath. Really don't like XC but almost wished I were uninjured and running. Proper XC course.
Was really pleased for my niece , 36th out of 54 after finishing in last place last year.

Did St. Neots Half Marathon today.
1:37:03 (Chip time)
Really pleased to have broken 1:40 given the last couple of weeks. Had a friend pace me round and he really helped by bollocking me when I needed it most.
Knackered now, though.

Great effort G. My ambition for next year is to break 1.40
Today I made my debut in the vets league, my first game of competitive football for about 10 years. Christ I'm sore now!
