off out for a meeting in Torquay... I know the game is now at a crucial point and on a knife-edge... but I'll be gone for about two hours!

That's alright, coz I've got a dental appointment. Pain and excitement all rolled into one morning.

Time for a piccy...
Image

can't wait for Monty to tell me what my defence is called. If it turns out not to have a name, then I'm claiming naming rights and in response to the Reti opening that's a Reticent Defence!

be a good idea, that.

Elsewhere, if anyone actually cares, the world championship match starts tomorrow in Chennai. Current champ vishy anand against the Norwegian wonderkid (currently with the highest rating of all time) Magnus Carlsen. Many people expecting a changing of the guard and the 22-year-old Carlsen to reign supreme for a number of years, ala kasparov.

The only championships I followed were a couple of legendary ones: Fischer-Spassky and Karpov-Kasparov. They were interesting chess wise of course, but the personalities and (in the case of Fischer-Spassky) the cold war aspect were as equally if not more fascinating.
I once played Nigel Short, by the way, when he was a teenager - he wiped the floor with me.

You have obviously taken to heart my original admission that I itch to take summat and get the action started - so I am going to step around your trap and retreat for the moment - reserving my energy for a devastating attack later on!!

thanks for the pic - reassured me that I am looking at the same board as you are!!

retreat!!!!!

I don't think you quite meant that totally illegal move, so I've amended it (in bold). If that isn't the actual move you meant we'll have to take it to FIDE for arbitration...
