Probably for the angry thread but this looks like the go-to thread for spreading our Christmas issues now so whatever.
Coca-Cola telling us that the holidays are coming.
They've been telling us that for 30 years and the holidays still aren't here yet.

I think that's because y'know WE DON'T CELEBRATE THE HOLIDAYS IN THE UK. Bloody Americans again.

Bish is the only Christian I know who doesn't actually believe any of the bible is true - despite preaching on it every week ;)

that's not what I asked... you appealed to Luke's gospel for evidence of when Jesus wasn't born - he is the one who said there were shepherds in fields..

ergo - you are treating Luke's gospel as an authority on the matter. which kinda suggests you believe his account. if you don't believe his account - then i don't know why you would appeal to his account for evidence as to when jesus wasn't born...

I believe there are many different kinds of truth in the bible - and (apparently unlike AH) I am not a biblical literalist - therein lies madness and some of the most tortuous and twisted thinking I have ever had the displeasure of hearing...

Presumably because that's what his aforementioned internet search came up with.

no - it isn't...

we have no idea when Jesus was born - not what day/month or even year..

your assertion that it was definitely not 25th Dec. is simply ludicrous... it is as likely it was the equivalent of dec 25th as it was any other day of whatever year it was...

there - easy!

how do you know that?
Being a man of the cloth, you know he wasn't......
what I know is that we don't have the faintest idea when he was born - we don't even know where he was born... I'm just interested to know how you can be so definite it WASN'T Dec 25th!
As I cannot help it, can I throw into the mix, we haven't even got the faintest idea as to whether he was born at all...

I think you could help it, had you tried a little harder.

As it happens, it matters not one whit as to whether there's now a Christmas Tree in my conservatory, because there is. Whether he was or whether he wasn't won't change that.

Could you be a little more specific? 'Christmas tree' is horrendously generic. ;)

We're talking a green needly thing with lights on it, rather than a collection of valves in some sort of well. :-)

We may not know much about shepherds in winter, but we do know the Census of Quirinius was - 6-7 A (so to speak) D. If Joseph was registering for the census and had to go to Bethlehem, we have a closer idea of the year of the (alleged) birth.

if you've got as far as accepting there was a "he" - then I think it stands to reason he was born at some time...
