Public Holidays (of which there is a gazillion) are gazetted each year for the year following. Each of those has a specific name. Some of them have 'moveable dates' (like Easter). There is a sprinkling of 'local' Public Holidays that are limited to a specific region and are often of the 'half-day' variety. In some instances, should the normal date of the Public Holiday fall on a Saturday or Sunday, the official Public Holiday is gazetted for following Monday. Given that no one really gives a toss as to why a Public Holiday exists this gives the convicts the day off to which they have been looking forward for so long.

Now, all this gazetteering is done by the states. This means that it's more convenient for each state to 'celebrate' a particular occasion on its own terms. As an example of that: a day known as 'Labour Day' turns up at various times of the year depending on which state it is that one lives or might visit. This can be important when organising interstate meetings of the business variety or even making a telephone call to a colleague situated in a state other than your own. Naturally allowances need also to be made for those places where a local piss-up is scheduled.

As far as I know no state has managed yet to move Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Australia Day or ANZAC day. I'm sure that the Union Movement is working on that as I type. By pure good luck Easter Friday (the Good bit) and Easter Monday (the other bit) whilst most annoyingly changing dates do hold to the Aussie tradition of a 'Long Weekend' and, of course, a Tuesday of purgatory.

Once upon a time we did have a Bank Holiday. Originally this was a holiday gifted to the employees of banks. That generous spilling of gold by the proprietors of such institutions turned, by some form of osmosis, to include insurance companies, all public servants, stock exchanges and clerical staff everywhere.

It's so simple. Get yourselves sorted.
We are organised.....

Are you aged about fiftyish by any feckin' chance?
Isn't everyone ??
No. Pencilbiter, kinty, Dan 'n' 89... they're all about 10.
Well '89 takes Dan on holiday with her, so that makes her surrogate 50'ish.

The PB was fckg BORN 50 so he doesn't count. Kinty is a chess-playing stand up comic ... so what does that say about him ?
What about HMX, Dan Ardiff and Bristol Wanderer
The above post is complete bollox/garbage/nonsense, please point this out to me at any and every occasion possible.

Well, he certainly skipped revolutionary socialist youthful idealism. And is well on trajectory to become the next Brian Sewell.

Correct.

Even I had that phase.

It was on a Wednesday if I recall correctly.

Strangely, I also had that phase. Wasn't a Wednesday though.

I'm used to the concept of 'ear worms' ie singing a song repetitively and there's usually a good reason for it ie it was the last song I heard on the car radio when arriving at work. Today however, for some bizarre reason, I'm singing the hymn 'There was a green hill far away', something I haven't heard, let alone sing, for about 36 years. What's more, I can remember the words. Weird.

and I hope you have twigged that "There is a green hill far away without a city wall" does not mean that it is a hill that (like most hills) lacks a city wall - but, rather, that the hill is outside a city wall!

I went to Sunday School for several years (enforced by mum) and the local hall was a Beulah Hall. I was never quite sure what denomination it was so I just googled it and found most of the links go to "Beulah Hall Caravan Park (Adults Only)" I don't think I'll click on any of the links :vomit:

I'd like to point out that although I was brought up Methodist, I have never managed a bank, bought hard drugs or used a rent boy. I do however have a co-Op divi card.

I too was brought up a Methodist, but never sang that hymn in 'chapel'. I did however go to a C of E primary school, where all pupils were marched to a church service every Tuesday morning during Lent (I think?). That was the only time I've had to sing that durge of a hymn.

Bob, are you sure you sang that at a Methodist church? Surely they sang more bouyant, tuneful hymns at your church, like 'O, for a thousand songs to sing' or 'Thine be the glory'? Afterall, we all know that Methodists are the only church goers who actually sing hymns with a bit of vigour and enjoymnet, rather than just mumbling through them and pretending to sing like many other denominations. Don't we? :conf:
Hope is what keeps us going.

I think I need to know how old the hill was and when it was born, before I can judge whether this is important or not. Then I can consider whether the city wall actually existed and it's relationship to the hill.
