Re: General Chit Chat
There's every point to it. If someone gets to A level and think that their 6 hour day, 38 week year is going to be adequate then they're in for a surprise. If they go onto higher education and think that then they may as well not turn up.
Not just the issue of developing a work ethic but also it's that time when you can go onto broader aspects of a subject.
As for helping your child ? Being available, directing their ideas, unblocking a stumbling point is surely what a parent does. Those who take it too far are doing no favours in the bigger picture. Any parent who thinks that's not their role but the teachers what's a slap.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Re: General Chit Chat
I have am very much in favour of homework and would go as far as to say that we should replace the exam/test system with a classwork/coursework system as it does students not good in the long run to only be pushed for short periods of year.
Students who work hard all year are penalized by the exam system (I know I was regularly penalized at school) while lay abouts who don't do owt until May are rewarded for working hard for one month of the year. Real life is not like that you have to be giving your best all year round, in fact name me a job where you can get away with doing nothing for 10/11 months of the year and then just work overtime for the rest?
So to summarise I think homework/coursework is a good idea as it is a fair representation of how a student has done over the whole year(come the end of the year) compared to not doing homework/coursework, and only being meausrted at the end of a year.

The above post is complete bollox/garbage/nonsense, please point this out to me at any and every occasion possible.
Re: General Chit Chat
A school I taught at was moving away from homework because teachers were daring to insist upon it being done on time. It encourages kids to organise themselves and meet deadlines, basic skills which are very important in the world of work as Bobo pointed out. At that school it was part of a wider agenda to simply spoonfeed kids into getting results for league tables. Poor preparation for sixth form (verified by a local sixth form's assessment of our kids performance) or a productive working life.
I'm not saying it's the be-all-and-end-all but getting rid of it is another step towards turning out a generation in which too many expect everything done for them and take no responsibility.

Re: General Chit Chat
Paying parents to help guide their children? It'd be a strange mum and dad who'd even think of such a thing. Good grief! The world is being overrun with weird minded people.
As far a homework itself is concerned it's a boon for the student. Why do I say that? Well, it's because said student has time to sit and work out problems with time to puzzle over a problem without the constraints imposed by the normal classroom environment. To me it was a pleasure rather than some form of impost to nudge my children toward a solution (only when asked) should it be necessary. Naturally a time came when the subjects and curricula moved outside my own knowledge - except in general terms - but, thankfully, by then they were able to fend for themselves.
Why is it that as the years flow by that parents seem to be abrogating more and more their responsibilities as parents?

Re: General Chit Chat
That cannot be about parents being paid to help their own kids with their homework!
In a world that has decided
That it's going to lose its mind
Be more kind, my friends, try to be more kind.
