The Painting Thread... (as opposed to art debate)

If you have a life outside of BWFC, then this is the place to tell us all about your toilet habits, and those bizarre fetishes.......

The original post contained the title "The Fighting Teneraire". The original poster has since corrected it.

Now that was helpful. I'll award you a badge: most helpful post of the day.

Here's some stuff.
The original Temeraire was a French warship captured by the perfidious rosbifs at the battle of Lagos and kept and used by the Royal Navy.
The crew of the 'Fighting' Temeraire (the second HMS Temeraire) actually called her the 'Saucy' Temeraire.
There were a further three ships called HMS Temeraire with keel laying dates of 1876, 1907 and 1939 although only two of them were actually built.
A further two shore establishments were called HMS Temeraire.
The French have subsequently built a Triomphant-class ballistic missile submarine called Temeraire, commissioned in 1999.
The French word temeraire means: rash, reckless, foolhardy.

I think I can quite boldly and confidently state that that is the largest collection of Temeraire-related information I have ever seen assembled in one forum post! bravo! :D

That lad in the pic was a 98 gun ship of the line captained by Eliab Harvey at the Battle of Trafalgar, it was third to break the frenchies line in the Weather Column (the one with Nelson in it), following Neptune and Victory. Can't remember if it was Temeraire or Neptune that was told to slow down so Victory could be first to break the line - Nelson liked a bit of the glory :) in fact he wasn't the first as Collingwood on HMS Royal Sovereign in the Lee column had already done it.
My dog (proper 57) had his anal glands emptied once and yes the smell is something to behold!!

Two attempts. The first one a painting I liked and copied, the second HMB Endeavour in Cook town bay. No 3 is with a few finishing touches and with the pic taken in daylight

Can you smell the grease? Saw a photo of the Lever End and it just had to be painted. It's 1995 Bolton v Everton. Doesn't seem eighteen years ago. Hope it goes down a bit better then Mr Lowry's Lever End... :wink:

Nice. I like looking at painting copies of oil paintings, themselves painted in oil, as it helps you to understand the original better.

Did you prime the canvas at all first, Raven? Or just work directly onto the white? Can you talk us through some of the challenges you encountered, if you can be arsed?!

You may be interested to know that there is a whole 'Turner and the Sea' exhibition on until April at the National Maritime Museum. http://www.rmg.co.uk/about/press/turner-and-the-sea" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I noticed last week that the Temeraire was not in its usual place, and this is why.
