Watched White Elephant, Argentinian, subtitled.

Here we're on City of God territory, though this film isn't anywhere near as good.

Set in the most notorious slum district of Bueonos Aires in the 1970s where the poor live in the midst of drug wars, violence, extreme poverty and repression from a brutal and corrupt state, we follow two Catholic priests in their efforts to to aid the poor with medical aid, education and rebuilding, at great risk to themselves. These priests are supporters of 'Liberation Theology' who have chosen this place to pursue their vision that 'Christ is with the Poor' and preach in a Church dedicated to 'Cristo Obrero' - Christ, the Worker. So, on top of the craziness and danger of the barrio they have to contend with a reactionary Church establishment.

The film is dedicated to the memory of Father Carlos Mugica, who was one of the founders of liberation Theology, worked in this barrio and was assassinated in July 1974. He summed up his life thus:

Nothing nor anyone will impede me from serving Christ and his Church by fighting alongside the poor for their liberation.

I was glad to have seen this, even if at times it lacked real focus.

Last night watched Boogie Woogie. ( I may have posted previously about this movie ??). General piss take on the art world and the bollox which surrounds it. On the plus side, you get a bit of female sex, Heather Graham's tits out & a great upskirt shot featuring Amanda Siefried. ( Great legs btw!). It's not the most taxing hour and a half, but pleasantly passes the time.

Might be getting on a bit now, but Last of the Mohicans is a cracking film, great music score and good acting, particularly by Steven Waddington. Madelaine Stowe is the female attraction, so buckskins on and Flintlock and tomahawk at the ready. 9-0'clock on Channel Five.

I've taken that according to the subtitles Danish for "sh*t" is "P*ss", which is bizzarre.

Speaking of the Danes - I watched Flame & Citroen last night. A Danish film based on actual events during the German occupation in 1944. Great film with a terrific performance from the guy who played Citroen (Mags Mickelson?). Definitely worth watching if you get the chance. There were a couple of recognisable faces from The Killing too

I had no idea Saving Mr Banks would be structured round such a father/daughter theme! It ruined me. A tremendous film. But that genre does me in. there must be some sort of biological emotion switch that flicks when you have children!

Been watching re-runs of Lewis lately. Tonight was the start of it all, his first encounter with D.C James Hathaway, a character that's totally intruiging and brilliantly done by Lawrence Fox. I've seen the whole series once and hope they do another. The young Morse quartet, titled Endeavour were very enjoyable too.

The Family. Dreadful. I wonder if kids under about 25 think of De-Niro as just an old duffer who appears in any old absolute shite. The daughter is fit tho, except she's meant to be 17 but she's clearly about 30.
