Not a clue. Given convention in 1816 I'd say not.....but who knows..?
Nah. Read up on Anne Lister (portrayed brilliantly by Maxine Peake in a fairly recent TV play about her).
Oh aye, but Anne Lister was a closet member (maybe even shop steward) of the box-bumpers union and decidedly against the feminist role Jane Austen played. What went on in public against behind closed doors is anybody's guess. Tipping the velvet wasn't invented by the Edwardians.
Well quite, but then that doesn't fit with your claim regarding the convention of the period.

Oh, I'm not claiming anything. I'm simply relating conventions in upper-middle class Regency England, a section of society where Jane Austen lived and wrote about. In her world things were so correct that the Duke of Wellington was refused admission to an assembley because he wasn't wearing dancing shoes, and holding hands was a social no-no unless couples were engaged. These things are listed as historical fact Anne Listers activities weren't convention, they were done in secret, so secret in fact that here diaries were written in code. As I said, what went on in private is anybody's guess.

if you care to look it up, you will find several feminists who would dispute this... so - not really "indisputable"...

The Ruskie and The Princess that I work with have just been out for lunch. They have a little box that they tip coppers into over the course of the year and there's generally enough in it by Christmas for them to go for lunch at the nice Italian down the road from here.
So, Girl Friday and I have decided that starting in January we're going to have a swear box between us. We reckon we should have enough in it to go away for Easter.

Turns out we have some or other machine that counts up the money from the vending machines int' factories. They wazz it through that and then the bean counters change it for them, the fun-spoilers! :whack:

Indeed - I never claimed otherwise! It was you who said she was indisputably a feminist. She was not indisputably a feminist!

An old client and I did that once (the swear box, not a weekend away). Every time we came out of meetings in his company we fined ourselves for each numpty, knobhead and dickhead we muttered. We had the idea of a good beer up on it, but after half a dozen meetings we realised the rate we were going the mortgage wasn't going to get paid! So we just settled on a fiver a month each and go out for a good feed and beer in the January.

Wel I don't. Tell us all.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

The Ruskie is the Russian, The Princess is the fussiest girl that it's possible to know, and Girl Friday is my Girl Friday - she sorts mounds and mounds of shit out for me for which I'm in her eternal debt.

You wouldn't want to get anywhere near the mind set of the North Koreans, would you !!

Totally tapped the lot of them.

I don't doubt that this guy will have never blinked as he had others executed over the years, but wow, no-one's safe there.

Apparently, amongst his crimes was the heinous one of 'clapping without enthusiasm' at a recent speech by the Great Leader.

Next time we see a clip of the audience applauding the little guy I think we can count on total enthusiasm all round.

Think he's just sending out a message to 'his' people. The guy's probably done nowt wrong but was told to confess or see his family butchered or some shit.

"Respec ma authoria!"
